Hello! I’m June Ann. Today is a beautiful day but sad. Yesterday our local hospital UF (University of Florida) Health - Flagler hospital decided to lay off 17 in-house staff interpreters. The hospital always had interpreters ready 24/7 to assist the needs of Deaf patients there. The hospital laid off all of them as of yesterday at 9a.
They were not fired. To be fired means that there were wrongdoings and that the interpreters are at fault. This is not the case. They were laid off. This means the corporation administrators decided based on budget changes that they must lay off certain people.
The hospital wants to move forward by using VRI 100% and stop using live interpreters.
We, the Deaf community, know this is not possible and not legal. It’s because we have different people with different needs such as DeafBlind, people waking up from a surgery and not being able to see the VRI screen, and many more different needs.
The local Deaf community here in St. Augustine is not happy with that change. There is an uproar. We are saying that we must do something. SADC (Saint Augustine Deaf Club) and its president, Tom D’Angelo along with the board are ready to step up and take action. They have established a task force and want to have a town hall meeting tonight at 7p.
Again. There will be a meeting tonight open to everyone. It will on the Zoom platform.
Wednesday, April 17, at 7p.
The Zoom meeting ID is 589 382 4745 or use this link—

If you want to help and participate in this movement, please come! We need your help to bring St. Augustine’s
Hospital’s in-house staff interpreters back. So many people really liked the service the hospital had!
Please come tonight at 7!
