Bishop Kenny High School is a four-year, Catholic, co-educational college preparatory school founded in 1952 in Jacksonville, FL. Rooted in Catholic values and traditions, our mission is to partner with parents in the education and formation of their children by providing a culture of faith, a rigorous curriculum, and personal enrichment opportunities through which all students can achieve and excel as they prepare for college and for life.

Happy Founders’ Day, BK!

We gathered yesterday for a special school-wide Mass to commemorate the September 3, 1952 founding of our school. The Mass was celebrated by Rev. Mike Williams ’57, the first alumnus to become a priest, and concelebrated by Rev. Stephen Parker ’12, our youngest alumnus to enter the priesthood.

The Mass also marked the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of St. Joseph, whose legacy of faith, service, and Catholic education is deeply woven into the history of our school. Ten Sisters of St. Joseph joined us for the celebration, together with several BK alumni priests.

As we celebrate 75 years of service, we give thanks for the priests, religious sisters, teachers, families, alumni, and students who have carried our mission forward—and for the faith that continues to guide us.

Congratulations to seniors Lyla Lam and Donavon Mattis, our September Students of the Month, recognized for their outstanding examples of friendship, kindness and humility!

Donavon, a varsity football and weightlifting team member, makes a point of welcoming younger players and helping them feel connected to the team. “When I started playing as a freshman, a few players did the same for me and it made a huge impact on me and I want to help others the same way.”

Lyla brings that same spirit of inclusion to every part of campus. A student ambassador, cheerleader, club member and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, she shared, “It’s the small things that are important, and I try to include others during the school day...to bond over our common interests.”

Both students remind us that friendship and kindness are often found in the simple ways we make others feel seen, welcomed and valued. We are proud to celebrate the example they set for our Crusader community!

Homecoming is calling, Crusaders!

Join us Friday, October 2 for the Alumni & Family Homecoming Tailgate as we celebrate 75 years of BK and cheer on the Crusaders under the Friday night lights.

Tailgate: 5–7 p.m.
BK Crusaders vs. Menendez: Kickoff at 7 p.m.

Tickets: $20 adults | $15 children under 12

Your ticket includes 4Rivers Smokehouse BBQ, Bruster’s Ice Cream, beer and wine for guests 21+, and admission to the football game.

And as part of our 75th anniversary celebration, bring along your favorite BK memorabilia and keepsakes to share in our special 75th anniversary display.

Congratulations to Mr. Scott Thomas, who was honored as the 2025–2026 Teacher of the Year by the Air & Space Forces Association (AFA), Falcon Chapter #399!

As a longtime Bishop Kenny physics and computer science teacher, Mr. Thomas represents the very best of STEM education and the impact a dedicated teacher can have on generations of students. For more than two decades, Mr. Thomas has inspired Crusaders through his passion for STEM education, helping expand Bishop Kenny’s physics and computer science programs and providing students with hands-on engineering experiences through our FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team. His impact reaches far beyond the classroom. Generations of his students have gone on to pursue engineering, physics, computer science, and aerospace careers at some of the nation’s top universities and service academies. We are incredibly grateful for Mr. Thomas’ dedication to challenging, mentoring, and inspiring our students to become the scientists, engineers, and innovators of tomorrow. Congratulations, Mr. Thomas! We are proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition!

On August 19, we dedicated the BKHS Endowment in honor of Monsignor Michael Houle ’71.

Established in 2021, the endowment has grown to more than $4.3 million with the help of the Legacy of Faith Campaign. Most Rev. Erik T. Pohlmeier, Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine, blessed the endowment wall located in the main office. During his 26 years as President of Bishop Kenny High School, Monsignor Houle made it a priority to ensure that a Bishop Kenny education was accessible to students whose families could not afford the cost of tuition. Approximately $6M-$7M in scholarships were awarded to deserving students and families during his time at BK. We remain committed to preserving this legacy through the Monsignor Michael Houle ’71 Endowment at Bishop Kenny High School, as the endowment provides a stable, perpetual source of scholarship income to assist families. Msgr. Houle put the lessons of the Gospel into action, providing future generations of Crusaders with the opportunity to experience the education, faith, and community that he worked so tirelessly to make accessible.

Last week in Mr. Broach’s AP Seminar class, students worked collaboratively to explore the various tasks and skills required for the AP Seminar course. After identifying the key components of the course, students developed creative ways to visually represent and demonstrate their understanding of each task and skill.
