Our Full series on the Haitian Curse is now out!
What's the price of freedom? For Haiti, it was 150 million francs.
In 1825, barely 21 years after defeating Napoleon's army and declaring independence, Haiti faced an impossible choice: pay France a massive ransom for their "lost property" (enslaved people), or face military invasion and re-enslavement.
They paid. For 122 years.
The final episode of The Haitian Curse explores how this debt:
- Drained 80% of Haiti's government revenue
- Prevented investment in infrastructure
- Created political instability that lasts today
- Became the foundation of Haiti's modern struggles
