Florida Young Advocates

Florida Young Advocates FYA is a hands-on approach to equip students with the skills necessary to become effective advocates for themselves and their community.

Florida Young Advocates is a nonpartisan, city-wide initiative to train high school students to be effective advocates for themselves and their communities. It provides a hands-on approach to equip students with the skills necessary to make positive changes at home while also preparing them for a future of successful advocacy. This organization was developed by a group of community-minded profess

ionals who saw a need for more civic education and involvement. FYA knows that students have the willingness and capacity to do good in their communities. They simply need the skills and a proper platform with which to do so. FYA is a two-part program that gives students the opportunity to see the impact they can have on their communities now while also preparing them to be successful lifelong advocates. The first part of the program will focus on civics education and basic advocacy training. Here, students will learn about various issues currently affecting their neighborhoods here in Jacksonville. They will hear from local experts and learn how they can effectively use their passions to better their home city. Students will choose an issue they wish to bring to the attention of city officials and have an opportunity to do so. Once students have a taste of advocacy, they will move into the part two of the program: developing the skills needed to properly advocate beyond their high school years. Here, students will hone their skills in critical thinking, public speaking, debate, persuasive writing, collaboration, and leadership. Students will do so through a unique legal perspective and see how we got to where we are by examining court cases and public record. Students will also receive college preparation support as well as mentorship from area advocacy professionals. The second part of our FYA program is based on successful programs in New York City and the State of Ohio called Legal Outreach and Law and Leadership Institute, respectfully.

We had a fantastic time last week covering more constitutional law issues - lots of great, nuanced questions from our students. We also had a special guest who gave an overview of investigative techniques. We sure learned a lot and can't wait for our next session tomorrow!

After two start date delays, we finally met to begin our fall FYA sessions! Students learned about the difference between a crime and a tort. Here, they are writing out a story that involves every tort they learned about. And yes, they were creative and brilliant as expected.

We learned a lot at the Duval County School Board meeting this week. An incredible amount of thought, research, and problem solving goes into a yearly school district budget and it was enlightening to hear those conversations.

Thank you to Councilman Garrett Dennis and Executive Council Assistant Haleigh Hutchison for joining us today to discuss the role of City Council and the best ways to present a plan of action to them. We learned a lot!
Students then brainstormed what it means to be an advocate and came up with a preliminary list of action topics.
What a great Saturday!

Did you know that FYA is based on an incredible program from Ohio called the Law and Leadership Institute? Our director, Jacalyn Crecelius, was a LLI instructor in Toledo, OH and had been dreaming of bringing something similar to FL the moment she moved. It took a few years, but it's finally here. Take a look at this article from The Ohio State University, where two LLI students are featured.

"Ron was one of my students at the Law and Leadership Institute. From the moment I met him, I knew he would do great things and it looks like I was right. I love this program and am beyond blessed to have been a part of it. If these students learned half as much from LLI as I learned from them, then it's absolutely a success." - Jacalyn
