Montessori Children's School

Montessori Children's School "… in every child is the seed that will mature into an adult.” —The Theosophist Children pass through sensitive periods of development early in life.

"The Montessori method of teaching aims for the fullest possible development of the whole child, ultimately preparing him for life's many rich experiences. Complemented by her training in medicine, psychology, and anthropology, Dr. Maria Montessori (1870 - 1952) developed her philosophy of education based upon actual observations of children. The Montessori Children’s School (MCS) was established

in 1993 and is a nonsectarian, nonprofit 501(c)(3) school. Our goal is to provide an authentic Montessori education that instills in students a solid basis for coping with the academic and social challenges they will encounter now and in the future. MCS nurtures the individual learning style of each student while maintaining standards of academic excellence. Dr. Montessori described the child's mind between the time of birth and six years of age as the "absorbent mind". It is during this stage that a child has a tremendous ability to learn and assimilate from the world around him, without conscious effort. During this time, children are particularly receptive to certain external stimuli. A Montessori teacher recognizes and takes advantage of these highly perceptive stages through the introduction of materials and activities which are specially designed to stimulate the intellect." Montessori schools are known for being supportive and nurturing environments that frequently come together as a larger community, and students teaching other students is a regular occurrence here at MCS.

Our students embodied a perfect example of this yesterday!

A Lower Elementary classroom was going to engage in a Volleyball lesson outside the temporary classroom of our Adolescent students.

When the Adolescent class heard this, some students asked if they could assist with the lesson, as several of them had formal volleyball experience.

What followed was a beautiful scene of younger students paying rapt attention to the words and actions of the older students, engaging fully with the information and activities, and demonstrating spontaneous concentration as they practiced new skills.

The older students demonstrated leadership skills, patience, and kindness as they encouraged their younger schoolmates to try new things and remarked positively as their intentional practice helped them to gain confidence.

Often, children are more open to learning skills and concepts from each other than they may be to learning from adults. In peer-led scenarios like this, all of the students are able to practice observing one another and mirroring the actions they observe.

The enthusiasm of all the students involved with the volleyball lesson yesterday was palpable to the adults observing them from the sidelines - we were all moved by the strong feelings of community and mutual respect.

Thank you to our amazing students for helping us to remember why we love it here!

🌿 **Celebrating Maria Montessori’s Birthday!** 🌿

Today, we celebrate the birthday of Maria Montessori, whose vision transformed education by honoring the natural curiosity, independence, and potential within every child.

Her belief that children should be given the freedom to learn, explore, and grow at their own pace continues to inspire Montessori classrooms around the world, including ours at MCS. 💚

Here’s to celebrating the child, the joy of discovery, and the lifelong love of learning.

Happy Birthday, Maria Montessori! 🎂🌱

🚐 New Wheels, New Opportunities! 🚐

We’re excited to share our two new passenger vans! These vans will primarily support our Adolescent Program, giving our students even more opportunities to get out into the community, build independence, practice real-world skills, and experience learning beyond the classroom. 💙

We’re also looking forward to the possibility of using the vans with our Lower Elementary and Upper Elementary programs in the future!

We’re so grateful for the opportunity to expand the ways our students can learn, explore, and connect with the world around them. We can’t wait to see where these vans take us! 🚌✨

Welcome back to MCS for the 2026-2027 school year! Thank you Jacksonville Yard Cards for the beautiful welcome sign ❤️❤️

We are so excited to be back in the classrooms with your children, getting to know our new students and staff, and welcoming back our returning community.

With the new school year comes a list of routines and transitions we need to incorporate (back) into our daily lives. These adjustments can be challenging, both for children and for adults.

In order to offer patience, compassion, and grace to our children and students as they prepare their belongings and themselves for a school day, we can also offer the same to ourselves.

As Dr. Montessori said, "How much fuller and richer life would be if we saw the children in all their greatness, all their beauty, instead of focusing on all their little mistakes? " (The 1946 London Lectures, p. 28).

We wish you all the best as you transition back into the school year with us!
