The Carolina Museum of the Marine is pleased to welcome Colonel Kipp Wahlgren, USMC (Ret), as its incoming President and Chief Executive Officer.

A 1995 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Colonel Wahlgren served more than three decades in the Marine Corps. His career included three deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, serving as commanding officer of 3D Supply Battalion, strategic planning for Marine Forces Europe and Africa, helping establish Marine Force Storage Command, and service as Deputy Commander of Marine Forces Korea. His most recent assignment was with 2D Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.

Colonel Wahlgren holds an MBA from Indiana University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He and his wife, Leasa, have two children. We welcome Colonel Wahlgren to the Museum community as he leads the organization into its next chapter.

On Patriot Day, we remember.

Within Lejeune Memorial Gardens stands a beam recovered from the World Trade Center—a tangible reminder of the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and of the first responder Marines and countless others who answered the call in the hours, days and years that followed.

At Patriots Park, the Eternal Flame burns in enduring tribute to service and sacrifice. In this photograph, two of the people who helped make the park and Patriots Walkway possible take part in lighting that flame.

Today, our community gathers again at Lejeune Memorial Gardens to remember those we lost, honor those who responded and renew our promise:

We will never forget.

What surprised you most?

For some visitors, it may be the Donor Wall near the entrance—not simply because of the number of names it holds, but because of what those names represent.

For years, individuals, families, businesses and organizations believed in the vision for Carolina Museum of the Marine. They gave generously, volunteered their time, shared their expertise and helped carry the Museum from an idea to opening day.

Even this photograph tells part of that story: volunteers and team members welcoming visitors, active-duty Marines lending a hand, and a historic Mule personally and lovingly restored by a donor and volunteer.

The Museum was built by a community—and the Donor Wall offers a remarkable glimpse of just how many people helped make it possible.

When you visited, what surprised you most?
