Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to give you a short update on the Judo camp that Sensei John, Tonka Roland and I attended in Matthews N.C at the end of June. Nadine, Yuri & Raoul were there too.
The camp was 3 full days and was set at Church just off the main road in Matthews. There were a total of 5 mats. Two in the main venue and 3 in one of two outer buildings. The third building was used for lunches and was set up at noon each day as a lunch buffet. Classes generally started at 9:00 am and ended at 5:00 p.m.
The main (principal) instructor was Shinjiro Sasaki http://sasakijudo.com/. Other judo instructors were Nick Lowe and Stan Wentz. Ne waza instructors were Rafael dos Santos http://www.rafaelrosendo.com/about.html and a Sambo specialist Igor Yakimov.
As part of his instruction Sasaki used a mix of techniques including ippon seoinage and osoto gari to demonstrate takedowns. Given his size (66kg) many of the finishing moves were not applicable to larger judoka, however he executed them with speed and precision. Sasaki also demonstrated several shime waza techniques including sode garuma, a nifty choke that starts with grabbing the inside of your opposing sleeve once you have your arms around your opponent’s neck.
Nick Lowe http://uk.linkedin.com/pub/nick-lowe/8/122/1b3, showed various techniques including ouchi gari; uchi mata and tai toshi (all modified to be applied from being positioned at a 90 degree angle to the opponent). Mr. Lowe went through the phases of competition with advice on how to get oneself onto the podium through several phases of the match.
Rafael dos Santos was one of the best instructors. His style was measured and low key. He demonstrated many ground and grappling techniques all of which were applicable to judo. At a later session, he demonstrated how to get to the ground quickly and effectively when an opponent attacks with tomoe nage or yoko tominoi
Lunch (at the venue) and dinners (at local Golden Corral) were included. However the most fun was being able to hang out with the Sensei’s and meeting judoka from around the country. There were lots of judoka from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia & Florida. The furthest away that I met was from Tennessee and Virginia. I would estimate that at the peak, there were a total of 200 judoka on all the mats.
I felt very prepared as a result of the training that we receive and it became clear to me that Sensei’s John, Tonka, Roland, & Carrie do a great job of transmitting judo knowledge to us and that for a smaller metropolitan area like Jacksonville, the judo is really good here.
I had a good time, and realized that there are limits to what I can do (i.e approximately 20 solid hours of judo in a 3 day period), but any soreness that I had was more than offset by the information I gained, and the camaraderie. It might be fun to considering taking a bigger group next year. By Michael Schenkman.
