🎶 “Our job is to be present and give each student individualized instruction.”

A powerful reminder from H. Conor Angell about the heart of teaching: meeting each student where they are and giving them the individual attention they need to grow.

As teachers, being present means listening, adapting, and recognizing that every singer brings their own voice, goals, and needs to the lesson. đź’›

🌟 NATS Membership Referral Spotlight | July & August 🌟

We’re celebrating our July and August membership referral winners! 🎉

These NATS members helped welcome new voices into our community—and we asked them to share why they love NATS. 💙

🎤 July Winner — Angelina Van D**e
"My first NATS conference was Las Vegas in 2018, where I unknowingly sat across from Karen Brunssen and Alan Henderson at lunch—and, as a newcomer, simply struck up a conversation. At every conference afterward, they recognized me like an old friend. That sense of welcome and community is what NATS means to me.

During COVID, the Journal of Singing connected me deeply with the work of Heidi Moss Erickson and Ken Bozeman. A few years later, I was thrilled to study with both of them at the St. Andrew’s Vocal Pedagogy Course in Scotland.

For five years, I’ve also served as secretary of the Vancouver NATS Chapter, helping create opportunities for our students and colleagues. After completing my MA in Vocal Pedagogy in 2025, I started an online quarterly book club to keep the conversation going.

For me, NATS is about community, lifelong learning, and sharing the joy of developing voices."

🎶 August Winner — Brian Manternach
"From performing in the NATS Auditions as a college student, to serving as a SNATS officer during graduate school, to eventually serving as a chapter president, state governor, and associate editor of the Journal of Singing, NATS has always been my primary professional organization. The information, opportunities, and community it offers are invaluable. I am grateful to have had the support of NATS at all stages of my education and career. It is a privilege to introduce new members to this tremendous association.”
