Your client’s “random” motivation is usually not random.

It’s survival.

They may say they want freedom…

But underneath, they might be craving:

Certainty.
Variety.
Significance.
Love & connection.

Clients usually don’t tell you their deeper need directly.

They tell stories.

Stories about their relationship.
Their business.
Their stress.
Their goals.
Their insecurities.

And hidden inside those stories is the real driver.

For example, I worked with a client who was torn between committing to one woman or continuing to “play the field.”

On the surface, it sounded like a dating issue.

But when we dug deeper, he kept talking about:

Guilt.
Obligation.
Wanting “the one.”
Wanting stability.
Avoiding chaos.

Different words.

Same driver.

Certainty.

Once we saw that, the whole conversation changed.

We weren’t coaching dating strategy anymore.

We were coaching the deeper emotional need behind the behavior.

That’s where coaching gets powerful.

Because until you understand the need underneath the story…

you’re coaching symptoms.

Your job as a coach is to translate:

Story → Need → Pattern → Breakthrough

That’s when your clients finally feel understood.

That’s when your questions hit deeper.

That’s when your coaching becomes transformational instead of just motivational.

Your client’s ‘random’ motivation is actually SURVIVAL.

Your client says they want freedom…
But what they really want is CERTAINTY.

They say they want adventure…

But underneath that?
They’re craving SIGNIFICANCE.
Or LOVE.
Or CONTROL.

Your client’s surface motivations are usually just STORIES wrapped around deeper survival needs.

For example: A client recently told me he was torn between committing to one relationship… or continuing to “play the field.”

On the surface, it sounded like a dating decision.

But when we dug deeper, something surprising showed up.

He talked about guilt.
Obligation.
Wanting “the one.”
Wanting a stable relationship.
Avoiding chaos.

At first glance, these sound like completely different motivations.
But underneath all of them?

One core driver:
CERTAINTY.

That changed the entire coaching conversation.

Even his GUILT was tied to certainty.

His desire for commitment?
Certainty.

His fear of chaos and instability?
Certainty.

That’s when the real coaching started.

Because now we weren’t coaching “dating strategy.”

We were coaching the hidden emotional NEED driving his behavior.

And until you understand the NEED underneath the story…
you’re only coaching symptoms.

Because ALL ROADS lead to your client’s core needs.

Every motivation your client has…
Every fear…
Every desire…
Every conflict…
…ultimately traces back to just a few core survival drivers.

And if you don’t see those drivers behind the ‘presented story’, you’ll coach symptoms instead of causes.

Clients won’t tell you their deeper need (they really don’t know what it is).

Instead, they tell STORIES.

Stories about:
their marriage
their business
their stress / insecurities
their goals

Hidden inside those stories are the REAL forces driving their behavior.

That’s your job as a coach:
👉 Translate their STORY into their NEED.

Once you understand the need…
…you finally understand the behavior (and the CLIENT!).

Now your coaching is surgically precise.

You stop:
throwing generic advice at clients
guessing at solutions
trying to fix surface problems

And you start seeing:
what the client is REALLY afraid of
what the client is REALLY chasing
why the client stays stuck in patterns they say they hate

This is where coaching starts getting powerful.

Because your client will feel deeply understood.

And most clients never had ANYONE truly understand:
what’s driving them
what they’re compensating for
what emotional need they’re trying to survive through

That level of awareness changes coaching sessions completely.

Now your questions hit deeper.

Your clients open up to you.

Your coaching becomes transformational instead of motivational.
This is one of the major differences between coaches who give ‘decent advice’…
…and coaches who create real breakthroughs.

Are you a coach? Or just a CONSULTANT cloaked in the ‘coach’ label?

Consultants are NOT coaches…as they primarily advise, explain, or lecture.

Here’s the advantage coaches provide over consultants:

Telling creates passive listening.
Questions create active engagement.

If I say:

“The sky is blue.”

You can ignore me.
Disagree with me.
Tune out completely.

But if I ask:

“Is the sky blue?”

Now your brain’s engaged. You:

Focus / reflect
become aware / consider your own experience
formulate answers yourself

Questions wake clients up.

And most importantly…

Questions allow the CLIENT to arrive at the truth themselves instead of resisting YOURS.

Because the moment coaching becomes: “I’m right, you’re wrong…”
…YOU’VE LOST THE ABILITY TO IMPACT YOUR CLIENT.

The client shuts down, defends themselves, or disengages.

Questions remove this power struggle.

Instead of:

“Here’s what you should do.”

It becomes:

“What do YOU notice?”
“What’s really going on?”
“What’s stopping you?”
“What do you actually want?”

QUESTIONS are where transformation BEGINS.

Nothing is ‘lost in translation’ because THE CLIENT IS TELLING THEMSELVES the answers.

The transformation appears in your client’s own awareness.
It comes FROM THE CLIENT, not from you.

And yes, great coaches still teach/consult sometimes.

But coaching (in its purest form) is not “telling the answer”.

Coaching is about asking questions powerful enough to unlock the answer already INSIDE the client.

That’s COACHING skill.

Not ‘expert knowledge’ or ‘guru’ mystique.

Even coaches who aren’t “masquerading” as coaches… never truly master questions, or develop the discipline to stay with an inquiry (a progressive line of questions).
