It was ONE year in our brick-and-mortar store yesterday. It has been a whirlwind for sure! But this year reminded me of a significant point: It isn’t about the books.
Obviously, it is such a blessing for parents to be able to pull books off the shelves and compare curriculum before making a purchase. Sure, there has been a lot of discussion within these walls about spiral vs. mastery, how to best teach phonics, textbooks vs living books. But I have to be honest … it’s the life that walks in the door that truly matter.
It’s the families that come to buy those books who matter to us the most. We’ve held your babies, rejoiced over your children’s baptisms and birthdays and first days of homeschool, we’ve prayed with you right here in the shop (or for you when you have walked out the door). We’ve held your hand when you received bad news. We’ve listened to you when you’ve shared fears and failures, we’ve rejoiced with you when your child succeeds, when you over-come your own fears, when you both meet a goal. We’ve problem-solved parenting challenges. I’ve even hunted down books specifically for early readers who want to read about horses or dogs or knights or penguins. I’ve stopped at used bookstores across the state while traveling because my shortest customers are looking for “that one book” in a series they love (and I know they are paying for it with their very own pocket money, so you better believe I’m going to make sure it’s a good price for them!). I have been called “auntie” and “Mrs. Ellis” and the “bookstore lady”.
