People ask me "What is backing Bitcoin?"

Money being "backed" by something refers to when things were backed by gold as a means of limiting the supply of dollars created. The value didn't come from the "backing" but from the trust created by the backing that the money couldn't be inflated without work being done to mine gold.
Bitcoin doesn't need to be "backed" because the code is open source and can be seen and verified by everyone, and with it you can see exactly how many bitcoin there are and if the supply is being inflated. Bitcoin are only created when miners expend money and resources and energy in the real world, thus proving they are doing "work".

Value is subjective and nothing has intrinsic value, outside of air and food and water, and even that is subjective as some people chose to starve themselves to death when the subjective value of life no longer means anything to them. Bitcoin has solved the problem of money by allowing us to distrust everyone on earth and still know that 1 Bitcoin = 1 of 21 Million for all time. The real question is, can you figure it out before it costs 10 million dollars a coin and everything is priced in Bitcoin.
