Our Jax State family is deeply saddened by the loss of Synquavia Keyona Staples, an upperclassman from Roanoke and a student in our nursing program who passed away on Sunday. Synquavia, known to her friends as “KeKe,” was working toward a career in nursing and, just this fall, received her white coat during the College of Health Professions and Wellness’ White Coat Ceremony.

Dr. Betsy Gulledge, Chief Nursing Administrator and Associate Dean of the College of Health Professions and Wellness, shared these words about KeKe:

“KeKe was a kind, compassionate, and trustworthy student who left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of teaching her. Her clinical instructors consistently shared how willing she was to step in and help her classmates and how eager she was to embrace every opportunity to learn, develop new skills, and experience something new.

“It was evident to everyone around her how deeply passionate KeKe was about becoming a nurse. She approached her education and clinical experiences with enthusiasm, compassion, and a genuine desire to care for others. She possessed tremendous potential and all of the qualities that could have made her an exceptional nurse. Her kindness, willingness to help others, and excitement for the profession will be remembered fondly by those who knew and taught her.”

Her resident assistant and friend, Julian Hooks, also remembered KeKe for the kindness she showed to others.

“KeKe was truly a kind and beautiful soul who was dedicated to becoming an amazing nurse and caring for others. She always walked into the room with a smile that radiated that kindness. She was a dear friend and will be truly missed.”

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Synquavia’s family, friends, classmates, faculty and all those who knew and cared for her during this difficult time.

Visitation will be held Friday, October 2, from 2–6 p.m. at Silmon-Seroyer Funeral Home Chapel in LaFayette. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 3, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Roanoke, with burial to follow at Skyview Memorial Gardens in Five Points.

Counseling Services is available to any student, faculty or staff member who needs support. During business hours, please contact Counseling Services at 256-782-5475. After hours, students may call University Police at 256-782-5050 to be connected with an on-call counselor.

Please keep KeKe’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers as we mourn this loss together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night at the Jax State STEAM Institute – Home of the Challenger Learning Center of Northeast Alabama in Rainbow City for the first stop of our 2026 State of the University tour.

I enjoyed sharing more about the students we serve, the opportunities ahead of us and how Jax State is continuing to grow and transform to meet the needs of our students.

A lot is changing in higher education, but what makes Jax State special remains the same — our people, our sense of community and our commitment to putting students first.

Our next stop is Birmingham on Tuesday, Sept. 29, and I hope our Gamecocks in the Birmingham area will join us.

I’m proud of where we are, and I’m excited about where we’re going. Go Gamecocks!

Proud that Jax State could host this morning’s 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at AmFirst Stadium as our community came together to honor the lives lost 25 years ago today.

Watching first responders and members of our campus and surrounding communities climb the stadium steps was a powerful tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who answered the call on September 11, 2001.

We remember those we lost, honor those who served and sacrificed, and stand with the families whose lives were forever changed. We will never forget.

The Cocky Classic Golf Tournament is always a great opportunity to spend time with fellow Gamecocks while coming together to make a difference for our students.

Registration is now open for the 6th Annual Cocky Classic on Wednesday, October 21, at RTJ Silver Lakes. Proceeds from the tournament benefit Jax State student scholarships through the Jax State Foundation.

“United is the Way” was a fitting theme for today’s United Way of East Central Alabama kickoff luncheon in Oxford.

It is always a joy to learn more about the many ways United Way selflessly serves our communities and brings people together to make a difference.

Jax State is proud to once again host United Way’s Day of Action on our campus. I hope you’ll join us on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Pete Mathews Coliseum as we work together to pack 50,000 meals to fight hunger across our communities.

The event runs from 8:30-11:30 a.m., and volunteers are needed. Register now and join us for a great morning of service.

It takes a tremendous team effort to make Move-In successful, and I appreciate everyone who gave their time to help our students and their families get settled and ready for the year ahead.

Today we had the privilege of welcoming Wendy Bailey and Jax State alumnus Dan Roberts from Chick-fil-A to The Friendliest Campus in the South as part of our Administrative Support Training.

Their insights on hospitality, culture, and customer service reminded us that every interaction matters. Chick-fil-A has long set the standard for creating exceptional experiences, and we appreciate Dan, Wendy, and our friends at Chick-fil-A for sharing their expertise with our team.

Most importantly, thank you to our administrative support professionals. You are often the first smile, the first voice, and the first helping hand our students, families, alumni, and guests encounter. Your professionalism, kindness, and commitment to serving others are essential to who we are as a university.

Yesterday marked a historic moment for Jax State as we officially cut the ribbon on the Randy Owen Center for the Performing Arts.

This facility represents more than a new venue, it is an investment in our students, our community, and the future of the arts in Northeast Alabama. We are proud to honor Randy Owen’s legacy while creating a space that will inspire creativity, learning, and unforgettable experiences for generations to come.

A special thank you to Randy Owen for his continued commitment to Jax State, our students, and the communities we serve. His belief in the power of education, music, and opportunity helped make this day possible.

Thank you to everyone who played a role in bringing this vision to life. The future is bright at Jax State.
