At the beginning of this school year, our scholars learned a skill they could immediately put to use.

They learned how to operate a heat press and used it to make sweaters for every one of their peers. From lining up the design to carefully pressing each sweater, they handled the process themselves. It took patience, attention to detail, and teamwork to get them all done.

But the learning didn’t stop there.

After learning the process, the scholars began creating their own designs as part of their entrepreneurship unit. They are now preparing to launch their designs in Quarter 4, turning the skills they learned into a real opportunity to create products for sale.

Moments like this remind us that learning does not always come from a workbook. Sometimes it comes from building something real, learning a usable skill, and discovering how creativity and business can come together.

At APA, our scholars don’t just “try” violin. They learn it the right way.

From the very beginning, we take a slow and steady approach. Scholars start by learning scales and how to read music so they build a strong foundation that will support them as they grow as musicians.

Each scholar is carefully measured and fitted for their own violin, giving them daily access to their instrument for consistent practice and steady progress.

Having their own instrument helps build responsibility, confidence, and a deeper connection to the music. When scholars have the right tools in their hands every day, their growth becomes natural.

We love watching our scholars develop discipline, creativity, and pride through music, one note at a time.

Two of our scholars had the chance to experience something truly special yesterday at THE PLAYERS, and it is a day they will be talking about for a long time.

They attended the First Tee x Morgan Stanley event at the Morgan Stanley Hospitality Suite overlooking the iconic 18th hole. The scholars had the opportunity to hear from keynote speaker , whose story and wisdom left a strong impression on everyone in the room.

One of the highlights of the day was receiving a signed copy of her book. For our young ladies especially, it was powerful to see and hear from a successful Black woman who has used her voice, leadership, and talents to make an impact. Moments like that matter. It gives young girls who are still discovering who they are a real example of what is possible and how they can one day serve their own communities.

After the program, the excitement continued as the scholars explored the Morgan Stanley Fan Experience Tent and watched the pros during the practice round. Getting to see the players up close and experience the atmosphere of one of golf’s biggest tournaments was something our scholars will never forget.

A heartfelt thank you to and Morgan Stanley for creating such a meaningful opportunity for our scholars. Experiences like this help them see the many paths available to them both on and off the course. ⛳

We’re celebrating a big win for one of our very own Alexander Preparatory Academy scholars!

Shanise Smith and the Mayport Middle School soccer team took home the City Championship last week with a 2–0 victory over their rivals at Fletcher Middle School.

Shanise had an incredible game, scoring both goals and playing a major role in leading her team to the championship. Her determination, teamwork, and skill were on full display.

A few members of her APA family even came out to the game to cheer her on and show their support from the sidelines, which made the moment even more special. We love seeing our scholars pursue excellence both in the classroom and on the field.

Way to go, Shanise! Your APA family is proud of you and cheering you on every step of the way. Keep shining! ⚽🏆

APA Take on Contemporary Art 🎨

Our scholars stepped into MOCA Jacksonville and rose to the moment.

They slowed down, studied the details, and asked thoughtful questions. Contemporary art challenges them to interpret, analyze, and form their own perspectives. There is no single right answer, only deeper thinking.

Field trips like this bring our mission to life. Scholars connected Studio Art concepts to real pieces, spotted color and texture in action, and confidently shared their ideas.

Today was more than a visit to a museum. It was learning in its fullest form.

Valentine’s Day at APA is always special because it reminds us how much we value our small, close-knit community. 💖❤️💖❤️

Our scholars are learning that love is shown through kindness, respect, thoughtful words, and meaningful actions. Whether they’re sharing valentines, practicing good manners at our luncheon, or simply encouraging a friend, they’re building habits that matter far beyond the classroom.

We are so grateful for each family who makes this community what it is. At APA, love isn’t just something we celebrate one day a year. It’s part of who we are.

One of my favorite surprises is when I walk into the classroom and find random origami creations sitting on desks.

No assignment. No instructions. Just creativity at work.

Origami may look simple, but it’s powerful. It strengthens fine motor skills, builds focus, and develops patience. Scholars have to follow precise steps, visualize shapes in space, and correct mistakes when folds don’t line up. That kind of thinking carries right over into math, writing, science, and problem solving.

But beyond the academics, origami gives scholars ownership. It’s quiet confidence. It’s the joy of turning a plain sheet of paper into something beautiful with their own hands.

At APA, we love when creativity shows up unannounced. It tells us our scholars feel safe enough to explore, imagine, and create just because they want to.

And honestly, those little paper masterpieces brighten our day every time.

At APA, Black history is not a single month. It is part of our everyday learning and lived experience.

Our scholars recently sang Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing, often called the Black national anthem. They are taught all three stanzas, not just the familiar lines, along with the meaning, language, and legacy behind the song. This is not memorization for a performance. It is understanding history, pride, and perseverance.

What makes this even more meaningful is that this song’s story began right here in Jacksonville. Knowing that connection helps our scholars see history as something local, personal, and alive.

At APA, we honor Black history all year long by teaching truth, context, and culture. We want our scholars to know where they come from, why it matters, and how their voices fit into a much larger story.

The first week back from winter break was all about easing in.

The scholars took their time getting back into the rhythm of the day, reconnecting with routines, and slowly diving back into their studies. There was a calm, steady energy in the studio as everyone found their footing again.

We wrapped up the week the best way possible with a Florida-style snowball fight and gingerbread house decorating. It was the perfect mix of movement, creativity, and fun, and a great reminder that learning happens best when joy is part of the process.

Here’s to a strong start and an even better stretch ahead.

Children are not on a single timeline, and learning is not one size fits all.

Every child develops at their own pace. Some grasp concepts quickly, while others need more time, repetition, or a different approach. That is not a weakness. It is simply how learning works. When we expect all children to move at the same speed, we often confuse memorization with understanding.

True learning happens when a child understands the why, not just the answer. One to one instruction gives space for questions, exploration, and mistakes. It allows an educator to meet a child exactly where they are, adjust the approach, and build confidence along the way. Instead of rushing to keep up, children are given the time to actually grasp concepts and make meaningful connections.

When children are supported as individuals, learning becomes deeper and more lasting. They are not just repeating information to pass a test. They are building a foundation they can grow from. That foundation looks different for every child, and that difference deserves to be honored.

We want to take a moment to show love to Mrs. Stephanie, one of our amazing APA grandparents. For the second year in a row, she generously donated her time and talent to decorate our Christmas tree, and the space feels warmer and more joyful because of her.

Grandparents are such an important part of the APA village. They bring wisdom, patience, and a deep sense of care that our scholars feel every day. We are truly grateful for Mrs. Stephanie’s continued support and the heart she pours into our community.

Thank you, Mrs. Stephanie, for helping make APA feel like home, especially during the holiday season.

On Friday, our scholars enjoyed a special “Holiday Hike” at Fort Caroline National Monument. The day was a perfect blend of history, movement, and celebration.

During the visit, scholars learned about the early Spanish settlers, their culture, and the role Fort Caroline played in Florida’s history. They also explored the native animals that call the area home, making connections between the environment and what they’ve been learning in the classroom. By the end of the visit, every scholar successfully completed the requirements to earn their Junior Ranger badge, a proud accomplishment for all.

The group completed the full 1.3-mile hike, showing perseverance, teamwork, and great attitudes along the way. We wrapped up the experience by celebrating together with muffins and hot cocoa, a cozy and well-earned treat after a full afternoon outdoors.

The cherry on top was meeting Park Ranger Mia, who led part of our experience. Seeing a Black woman in this role was powerful for our scholars. Representation matters, and they were able to witness Black girl magic right in their own backyard. It was a moment that made the day even more meaningful and memorable for everyone.
