DON'T throw a skill at tryouts before you answer these 4 questions:

1️⃣ Can I throw this 3 times in a row clean?
2️⃣ Can I throw this and land it in a routine?
3️⃣ Can I execute it in multiple full outs back to back?
4️⃣ Can this skill withstand other factors like stress, exhaustion, mental fatigue, slight injury?

If you're feeling really nervous about throwing your skills at cheer tryouts, it's not typically because you're bad under pressure. It probably means you are planning to throw a skill that is outside of your confidence zone. On tryout day the spotlight is already bright and you don't need to add anything to that: like a really difficult skill that you aren't truly confident you can stick.

Did you answer yes to all 4 questions? If not, don't throw it at tryouts. ❌ Because the expectation for your coach is that if you throw a skill at tryouts, it is going to be in the routine. You're going to be held to that standard.

Instead, send your cheerleading coach a video of you working toward being fully confident in the skill! Share videos of you throwing it on a rod floor, spring floor, or mat. Send a video of you with a spot. It shows your coach that you're working outside of practice to get better for the team and hopefully one day compete that skill in a routine. That's leadership. And that is the kind of athlete a coach wants to have on their team!

What skills are you working on for tryouts?

🙅‍♀️ Stop treating tryouts like a first impression.

It's 2026, not 1998 👀 Coaches already know who you are before you throw a single skill.

Cheer coaches know who feeds into their program. They've watched you compete online, talked to your past coaches, and have found you on social media.

New to the team? Of course that first face-to-face moment is an opportunity for a first impression, but it isn't the first time your coaches have heard your name.

Your reputation, your attitude, and your effort in a program all season whether returner or rookie: that's getting evaluated right along with the new skills you're showing up with. The tryout is just the formal part.

Your tryout starts way before tryout day. Here is what you can do right now to be a standout cheerleader:

1️⃣ Clean up your social media. Your personal reputation matters as much as your talent level. Coaches are looking.
2️⃣ Start sharing your training. Post skills you're working on. Post when you're in the gym working on strength & conditioning. Show your coaches that you are the kind of athlete willing to put in the work.
3️⃣ Be coachable in every practice, tumbling class, and open gym. Your future coach is talking to your current coaches!
4️⃣ Show up early to practice, stay late, be the first to roll out mats, and cheer for your teammates all season long. Character is not invisible.
