Spring has sprung--and spring break has come and gone! For many children, the return to school is exciting. But for others, the transition back to school can be a source of anxiety.

So how do we make the back-to-school transition easier on kids?

✅ CREATE A ROUTINE CHART: Children thrive when there is order and structure. Help your child create a chart of all the things that need to be done each day. You could include waking up, eating breakfast, getting shoes on, and completing homework assignments.

✅ ENCOURAGE A SENSE OF BELONGING IN SCHOOL: Allow children time to socialize with friends after school. Help them explore different extra-curricular clubs and activities that can foster a sense of belonging in the school community.

✅ LOOK OUT FOR SIGNS OF STRESS: Physical symptoms like nail biting can be an indicator of anxiety. So can sudden, unexplained complaints of stomachaches or headaches. If your child is exhibiting signs of stress, their anxiety is often related to school.

THE #1 REASON YOUR CHILD HATES MATH:

Here's the thing: a lot of kids struggle with math. We've been teaching for a long time, and we've seen MANY children over the years who say they "just don't like math."

Now, listen, we get it: math can be hard! But after years of experience, we've identified one MAJOR pattern that almost every child who says they hate math or that they're just not good at it has in common:

They don't know their basic times tables.

Now hang on. Before you go and say, "But my child knows his times tables!" Ask your kid a multiplication problem--say, 7 x 7--and see how long it takes him to answer it. Our guess? It'll take him longer than you expect.

WHY THIS MATTERS: Picture a tower made of blocks, or a pyramid made of bricks. That's math! In math, every single problem can be solved correctly if you just follow a particular series of steps in the correct order. But if you don't lay the base correctly--meaning, if you don't understand the fundamental problems all the other steps are based on--you won't make it all the way to the top.

EVERY math concept is ultimately based on times tables. (Seriously, we mean EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.) Here are just a few examples of the math skills that require multiplication:

-Division
-Reducing fractions
-Word problems about distance, rate, and time
-Word problems about money
-Percents
-Area & perimeter
-Pythagorean theorem
..and that's just the beginning.
