Hey hello hi there. I’m slowly resurfacing as after school activities are finishing for the year and I’m finally getting the hang of the teaching/parenting/making dinner routine….just in time for summer 😅 My son came home today and said he wanted to see a duck for his teacher who collects ducks. So we pulled out some fabric and the dusty Bernina and made up one. He turned out pretty cute! (PS don’t freak out if your Bernina doesn’t turn on after it’s been stored a while. Apparently it can take up to 20 mins to power up after being turned on again 🫢)

Finally finagled quilting into math class today! The kids are always asking “when will we use this in real life” (as if that’s the only reason to learn something 🙄). So I brought the quilt and fabric, and quilt pattern to show them how I use similar figures and proportions in real life. I even had some kids tell me they’ve made quilts before! 🙌🏻 Or that their grandma quilts and I replied with, “then your grandma must be really cool.”

I *needed* classroom halloween decor…so I made some myself! I got the wreath at Target and used fabrics from my stash to make the bunting. I even got a few compliments on it today from teenagers—I know, teenagers giving compliments 😱🏆

Surprise! Two weeks ago I had absolutely no idea I would be here sitting in my own classroom with my own Stanley with my own sticker on it. I was doing art camp with my kids when got text from a friend asking if there’s any chance I wanted to teach middle school math this year. I laughed it off at first but then felt the pull once I realized how understaffed schools are this year. I couldn’t bear to think of kids sitting there with no teacher, or someone who doesn’t want to be there, or someone who doesn’t know what they are doing.

Not that I know what I’m doing. It has been 12 years. Last time I taught, kids didn’t have cellphones. Parents didn’t come to meetings, or answer any of your calls. I don’t know the new tech or how to post to schoology. But I do know how to teach and I know how to love and I love algebra. Who knew this year that my focus on edit would lead me here? I spent the first six months of 2023 editing out pretty much everything in my life and then not knowing what to fill the extra space with. That extra space is certainly filled now! It’s only my third day and I feel like I’ve been doing it for 20 years 😂

The only wild card is my health. I really hope that it will hold up. Send all your thoughts and prayers that I don’t flare and can be there with the kids 💗

I still have two collections releasing in the next year—Sweetbriar in November and Chloe in July 2024. I also have lots of collabs coming out with and a super exciting magazine thing coming in January that I can’t share yet. Be on the lookout for all this! Love all you my quilt and design friends!
