If you analyze the State of Florida’s rubric, the first column is Purpose, Focus, and Organization. If you have a slamming outline, you can write an I and C paragraph AND a topic and wrap up sentence which will nearly assure you at least 5 points on the Writing FSA. This keeps your focus clear and repeated PLUS gives you a guide as you begin to support your essay in your middle paragraphs. Why does Top Score Writing work????? Getting kiddos to identify topics and strengthening T and W sentences right now. Sometimes the review of individual pieces is just vital. Top Score not only does this in a structured way that kids can depend on but it gives them freedom once they are a solid writer and begin to get creative! Writing a topic sentence is simple!!! Include a transition, the prompt, and your topic (plus your opinion/side if it’s opinion prompt) and VOILA! Students can be basic of begin exploring with fancy transitions or complex sentences as they increase in writing proficiency. We practiced being mostly basic but also fast. The first tutoring group is AMAZING! We are working feverishly and I assigned the task of writing an I paragraph in 7 minutes with a partner when you only have an outline. With the parameters given, the kids ROCKED it!!!! So proud of the work they are willing to put in to learn and perfect their essay writing! There is nothing I have seen work better in upper elementary curriculum than . It is systemic and methodical and gives children who are struggling readers and writers the ability to still write a complete essay simply because the structure is set. This week we did Fast Planning practice with buddies and my kids were BEASTS and killed it!
