✨ LIGHT UP AUTISM. LIGHT UP HOPE. ✨
One of our favorite JSA traditions is officially back!

The 2026 Jacksonville School for Autism Luminary Sale is now OPEN, and our SpectrumWorx Enterprises STEP students are ready to get to work preparing thousands of luminary kits for families, neighborhoods, businesses, and communities throughout Jacksonville. But these kits are about so much more than creating a beautiful holiday display.

Each luminary kit provides our students with meaningful, hands-on vocational experience. From measuring and packaging materials to counting, assembling, labeling, organizing orders, and preparing deliveries, students practice real workplace skills while taking pride in producing something that brings joy to our community.

12 white flat-bottom bags
12 white votive candles
2 bags of pea gravel
And every kit is packed with care by JSA STEP students!

The summer heat has brought a bounty of fresh basil and mint to our greenhouse, and our STEP Crew has been putting that harvest to good use while building valuable vocational and independent living skills! After shopping for ingredients at Costco, students got right to work harvesting, washing, rinsing, and drying the herbs. They practiced teamwork and attention to detail as they carefully separated leaves from stems, while also strengthening skills such as following multi-step directions, reading recipes, measuring and weighing ingredients, kitchen safety, and using equipment like a food processor.

On Tuesday, the crew made basil salt and rosemary salt, and on Thursday, they created peppermint sugar. Activities like these give our students hands-on opportunities to practice skills they can carry into future employment, community experiences, and everyday life—all while creating something they can be proud of. Thank you Sarah Shull, our gardening extraordinaire! We could not do this without your guidance and expertise!

We can’t wait to see what they make next!

Learning on the Job: STEP Up Students Take on Parking Lot Duties at JSA

At Jacksonville School for Autism, some of the most meaningful learning happens outside the classroom. Each morning, our STEP Up students, who are part of JSA’s STEP Program, head out to the staff parking lot with teacher Caitlyn and paraprofessional Emily for an important job: serving as JSA’s parking lot attendants.

The students carefully make their way through the parking lot, checking vehicles for the official JSA staff parking hangtag. When they find a vehicle without a hangtag, they leave a friendly note reminding the driver that the parking lot is reserved for JSA staff.

While this daily responsibility helps ensure our staff have access to designated parking, the experience is about much more than parking spaces. It is another opportunity for our students to practice valuable vocational and life skills in a real-world setting.

Through this task, students are learning to follow a routine, pay attention to details, visually identify information, work as a team, complete a task from start to finish, navigate a workplace environment, and take responsibility for an important job. They also gain confidence from knowing their work contributes directly to the daily operations of JSA.

These are exactly the types of hands-on experiences the STEP Program strives to provide. By turning everyday responsibilities into meaningful learning opportunities, our students are building skills that can translate into future employment, greater independence, and active participation in their community.

We are proud of our STEP Up students for taking their parking lot responsibilities seriously—and grateful to Caitlyn and Emily for finding creative ways to make vocational learning part of each day.

At JSA, every experience is an opportunity to Educate. Engage. Inspire.

More Than a Diagnosis: STEP Students Put Their Skills to Work!

JSA’s STEP students recently had the opportunity to partner with the office of Dr. Ross Fishman Fishman Pediatric Dentistry by assembling dental hygiene sample kits for use in the office and during school outreach presentations. This type of repetitive, detail-oriented task is a perfect fit for many of our students, who excel when given structured, purposeful work that allows them to build confidence, independence, and valuable vocational skills.

This is truly Autism in Action—and a wonderful example of our Jacksonville community investing in the abilities of individuals with autism. Partnerships like this allow businesses to look beyond a diagnosis and recognize the incredible skills, focus, reliability, and potential our students bring to the workplace. We are so grateful to Dr. Fishman and his team for providing a meaningful opportunity for our students to contribute, gain real-world experience, and show our community just how much they are capable of achieving!
