To Mr. James Meadows, From your Bluewater family, Fair Winds and Following Seas.

Mr. James is a legend at Bluewater Maritime School. Our graduation room is proudly named for him and every month we celebrate students launching into their careers in that space. Up until just a few years ago, he taught and mentored instructors and staff at Bluewater as well as students for many many years. His opening lines to new instructors was often, “If you are not here for the students, then go find yourself another job.” He cared deeply about helping students and today his spirit lives on through the lives he touched and maritime careers he helped launch.

Mr. James went home to be with the Lord on August 4, 2026. In this video clip he says, “I am a part of Bluewater” and we are so grateful for all he did to shape our culture and leave a part of him behind with us.

How long does it take for that next step or "promotion" in your merchant mariner career? For AB special you would need 180 days of Sea time and upload that along with a lifeboating course and an AB course. We offer the AB course here at Bluewater Maritime School but we do not offer the lifeboating course. We always try to encourage and remind our students to keep up with their hours so they can focus on getting to an AB level and not being entry level for an extended period of time! CDL license vs Merchant Mariner (ordinary seaman). Both have their pros and cons! We get many calls at BlueWater Maritime School for CDL drivers wanting to make the switch to be a merchant Mariner, this is my take.

Mr.Gary is from the Military Sealift Command and recruits merchant mariners. MSC meets naval ships in the middle and helps supply them. From ABs to entry level, this is an insight MSCs process for employing mariners. While having experience is great, even with just training you can still stand out!
