Before there was an OLLI at UNF, there was an idea that a retiree destination like Jacksonville ought to offer learning opportunities for seasoned adults like those offered at Johns Hopkins University's Evergreen (now OLLI). Ralph participated there until relocating here. He proposed the idea to UNF. Once UNF agreed, Ralph chaired UNF’s fledgling program’s curriculum committee and taught every term.

It Started with a Corkscrew! Serendipity is a beautiful thing. UNF alumna Alice Rhatigan signed up for a Road Scholar trip to the beautiful hill towns of Tuscany, expecting an enriching learning experience. What she couldn’t have known was that the journey would ultimately help inspire the creation of OLLI at UNF—and shape a vibrant lifelong learning community with a dynamic schedule of programs.

By day, the group explored Tuscany’s timeless towns and immersed themselves in the region’s rich history and cultural traditions. By night, they gathered for communal wine tastings. Alice quickly became an essential member of the group because she happened to be the only one with a corkscrew!

One evening, as fellow travelers gathered around Alice and her trusty corkscrew, conversation turned to lifelong learning programs. Several shared stories of their experiences with OLLI programs at Duke University and San Francisco State University. Ken, a member of the San Francisco State program, shared information about his OLLI and sparked Alice’s curiosity.

When Alice returned to Jacksonville, she began looking for similar enrichment opportunities for seasoned adults. Her search led her to UNF’s Division of Continuing Education, where she was connected with the former dean. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Meet Wayne Heckrotte, one of OLLI’s earliest instructors and administrators. His dedication to lifelong learning helped shape the welcoming, intellectually curious community OLLI members enjoy today.

Remembering her husband, Carol Heckrotte wrote: “He was an early and well-loved OLLI instructor and administrator until he passed away in 2023. Wayne and I were thrilled to find OLLI when we moved to the Jacksonville area in 2007. Wayne and I found mental enrichment and lifelong friendships through OLLI, the best contributions to a happy retirement!”

As OLLI at UNF celebrates its 20th anniversary, we are taking a journey through stories that made our community what it is today. Over the coming weeks, we’ll introduce the founders whose vision, dedication, and passion helped shape OLLI into the vibrant lifelong learning community. We hope you’ll follow along as we honor the people, memories, and moments that have defined 20 incredible years.

Meet OLLI founder Martin “Marty” Connor, whose curiosity and love of sharing knowledge helped shape the OLLI experience we know today.

In 2012, Marty recalled:
“I’ve been told that since OLLI began in September 2006, I’ve taught more than 43 classes. Why have I done it? I suppose it’s because I’m compulsively curious and love sharing what I’ve learned. But the OLLI experience has been a particular joy! I’ve had the opportunity to interact with people my age who share my interest in such a wide range of topics.

“It’s difficult, looking back, to single out one moment as more gratifying than the others, but one experience after class deserves retelling. Our daughter, Anni Baker (Cecil), a history professor at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, was visiting and sat in on one of my classes.

“As we drove home, she seemed to be in a state of shock. ‘Dad,’ she said, ‘I’ve been teaching undergraduate and graduate students for 15 years, and I’ve never experienced anything like that. They wanted to be there! They were genuinely interested! You had their complete attention! They asked great questions and made great comments! Astounding!’

“What could I say? She was right. That’s OLLI.”
