Twenty-five years ago, the Union community gathered across campus as the events of Sept. 11, 2001, unfolded.

For students, faculty and staff, a day marked by fear and uncertainty became a moment to put faith into practice.

“We had no reference point,” Sarah Jane (Head) Drury (’02) remembers. But as the Union community gathered to pray and turn to Scripture, she began to reconcile her fear with the truth that God remained sovereign.

Today, Union alumni and former leaders reflect on Sept. 11, the community they experienced and the faithfulness of God through it all.

Last week in chapel we heard from Stephen Presley, director of Education and Engagement at the Center for Religion, Culture & Democracy, who shared a message from Psalm 2, encouraging us to find refuge in Christ. On Friday, Jordan Thomas, lead preaching pastor of Grace Church in Memphis, challenged us to run with perseverance the race marked out for us as he taught from Hebrews 12.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Matthew 11:28-30

It started with a student’s question.

More than 20 years ago, a calculus student asked Union University professor Bryan Dawson about infinitesimals. Dawson didn’t have the answer he wanted to give, and the question stayed with him.

Years of research, classroom testing and scholarship followed. Now Dawson, university professor of mathematics, has published his second calculus textbook with Oxford University Press, “Multivariable Calculus Set Free: Infinitesimals Ride Again.”

By incorporating infinitesimals, or infinitely small numbers, Dawson has developed an approach designed to help students understand calculus more effectively and solve increasingly sophisticated problems.

“I have often prayed that this textbook will be a blessing to all readers,” Dawson writes in the preface. “May it always be so.”

Read the story behind his work:

JACKSON, Tenn. — During the spring semester in 2004, Bryan Dawson was teaching his calculus students about limits when one student began asking some questions about infinitesimals. “I didn’t have good answers,” Dawson recalled. “And so, that sat on the back of my mind for a while.” That ...
