The Richard Wright Center at Jackson State University

The Wright Center’s work is multifaceted. It helps students to master all stages of the writing process and offers feedback and guidance on their written work.
The Richard Wright Center for the Written Word is to enhance instruction and improve student learning outcomes by facilitating thinking, reading, writing, and research across the curriculum. The Richard Wright Center for the Written Word was conceived to provide “daily support services for students who need assistance and encouragement in completing their writing assignments” (Jackson State Univer
sity, Herrin Grant Proposal, p. 1). The Wright Center was named after Richard Wright, the world-renowned, Mississippi-born writer who was once part of the community now served by Jackson State University. The Wright Center also conducts workshops to help students improve their performance on the Undergraduate English Proficiency Examination. As an added benefit, the Wright Center gives the tutors, both graduate and undergraduate, an opportunity to hone their own skills in the process of helping their peers. Furthermore, it promotes the Writing across the Curriculum initiative among the faculty members by helping them to incorporate writing into their courses. In addition, the Wright Center collaborates with faculty members. At the request of instructors, Wright Center staff members visit classes to advise students on how to approach their writing assignments and how to manage their writing process. Staff members also emphasize the benefits of regular visits to the Wright Center and provide students with information sheets that can help them complete their writing assignments. Apart from class visits, staff members assist faculty members in preparing scholarly manuscripts for publication. The Wright Center is a valuable resource, not only for Jackson State University students but also for Jackson State University faculty and staff. It provides a calm, supportive, distraction-free environment where writers can focus on their work. As new programs are planned and implemented, the Wright Center continues to develop and improve.
