Congratulations to Reanna Hales, a 2013 UMMC MLS graduate and 4th year Microbiology and Immunology doctoral student with the UMMC Cell and Molecular Department!!

She presented at the American Society for Virology conference held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from July 26-31, 2026. Reanna discussed the impact of obesity on influenza-associated cardiac dysfunction.

We are proud to spotlight Ashley Thompson, a 2024 Medical Laboratory Science graduate, who is now pursuing a Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)!

Her journey is a testament to the diverse career paths a MLS degree can open. Reflecting on her experience, she shared:

“My combined training as a Medical Laboratory Scientist and Neuroscience PhD student has given me a unique perspective at the interface of basic research, clinical relevance, and therapeutic development. My long-term goal is to become an independent neuroscientist in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, bridging discoveries in cognitive neurobiology with biomarker development, therapeutic innovation, and patient-centered care. As neurodegenerative disorders continue to rise with an aging population, I am motivated to contribute to research that addresses this growing public health crisis, a goal shaped in large part by my training and experiences in the Medical Laboratory Science Program at UMMC.”
