One thing I will continue to advocate for in mathematics classrooms: students deserve access to grade-level learning.

Yes, they may have gaps.
Yes, they may need scaffolding.
Yes, they may need prerequisite skills reinforced along the way.

But none of those things mean we stop exposing them to the mathematics they are supposed to be learning.

Sometimes our desire to ā€œmeet students where they areā€ quietly turns into keeping them where they are.

And that’s not the same thing.

If a fifth grader has third-grade gaps, address those gaps. Scaffold. Model. Break the learning down. Connect the prerequisite skill to the fifth-grade concept.

But give that child a chance to do fifth-grade math.

We cannot decide that students aren’t capable of something they have never been given the opportunity, support, and expectation to attempt.

High expectations aren’t a lack of compassion.

Sometimes believing a student can do more is one of the most compassionate things we can do.

Students deserve support.
They also deserve to be challenged.

Give them the opportunity to rise.

I’ve heard some version of that sentence over and over again this week. And THAT is what we do. šŸ™ŒšŸ¾

Just today, we went from helping an Algebra student understand simplifying expressions by connecting it to baseball teams āš¾ļøā€¦to reviewing rational expressions with a Precalculus student…to building addition fact fluency with a 2nd grader virtually…to graphing linear equations in point-slope form with another Algebra student.

And that’s just TODAY. šŸ˜‚

This week has included students from 2nd grade through Precalculus—private sessions, small groups and virtual tutoring. We’ve worked on addition fluency, decimal operations, Algebra, Precalculus and plenty in between.

Different ages. Different skill levels. Different learning needs.

That’s why we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all math support.

Sometimes a student needs more practice. Sometimes there’s an underlying skill gap. And sometimes they simply need someone to explain the SAME math in a way that finally makes sense to them.

And we’re already seeing the results. Students who started the year struggling are bringing home A’s and B’s, improving quiz grades and building confidence—and we’re only about a month into the school year. šŸ™ŒšŸ¾

Math is our specialty. Helping students finally ā€œget itā€ is what we do.

More practice isn’t always the answer.

If a student practices the wrong skill 50 times, they’ve gotten more practice…but are they actually any closer to solving the problem?

This is why I’m such a believer in targeted math support.

During this session, we weren’t randomly working through HESI practice questions just because they’re on the test.

We had already identified a specific area that needed strengthening: adding and subtracting mixed numbers.

So that’s what we worked on.

Understand the skill.
Practice the skill.
Correct misconceptions.
Build fluency.
THEN move forward.

This applies whether you’re preparing for the HESI, sitting in a 4th-grade classroom, taking Algebra 1, or studying for another math-based exam.

Sometimes students don’t need more math.

They need the right math at the right time.

Y’all had questions after yesterday’s division video, so we’re keeping this lesson going. šŸ˜‚āœļø

Someone asked:

ā€œWhat does the partial quotients area model look like when there’s a remainder?ā€

Let’s take yesterday’s 156 Ć· 12 and change it to 157 Ć· 12.

We can still use friendly multiples:

12 Ɨ 10 = 120
12 Ɨ 3 = 36

That gives us:

120 + 36 = 156

and

10 + 3 = 13

But our dividend is 157, not 156.

157 āˆ’ 156 = 1

There isn’t another whole group of 12 in that remaining 1, so:

157 Ć· 12 = 13 R1

That’s your remainder. šŸ™ŒšŸ¾

The boxes may look unfamiliar, but the mathematics hasn’t changed. We’re still asking:

How many groups of 12 can I make from 157, and what’s left over?

And THAT is what I want parents to understand about so many of these newer-looking methods. Once you understand what the model is showing, it doesn’t seem nearly as crazy. šŸ˜‚

Same math. Different method.

Parents…we’re back. šŸ˜‚

ā€œThis is NOT how I learned math!ā€ — Part 2

Today’s question:

Whatever happened to LONG DIVISION?! šŸ˜©šŸ˜‚

If your child comes home dividing with boxes and area models, I promise they’re still doing division. šŸ˜‚

In this example, we’re solving 156 Ć· 12.

With the traditional algorithm, we get 13.

With the area model, we use partial quotients and what students already know about multiplication:

12 Ɨ 10 = 120
12 Ɨ 3 = 36

120 + 36 = 156

So our partial quotients are:

10 + 3 = 13

Same answer. šŸ‘šŸ¾

SAME MATH. DIFFERENT METHOD.

The area model helps students visualize the relationship between multiplication and division while using number sense and multiplication facts they already know.

And here’s something important: another student might break 156 apart differently—and that’s okay! The goal is understanding the mathematics, not making every student’s work look identical.

So when you see all those boxes on the homework, don’t automatically assume they’re making math harder. šŸ˜‚ There really is a mathematical reason behind what you’re seeing.

I’m going to keep breaking down the elementary and middle school math methods that have parents saying:

ā€œThey did NOT teach us this!ā€ šŸ˜‚

ā€œI’ve NEVER seen this!ā€ 🄹

That’s what one of my parents said when she showed me her son’s Algebra 1 grades this week.

A’s and B’s.

She told me she was prepared to see some C’s…maybe even a D. But A’s and B’s?!

Her mind was BLOWN. šŸ˜‚

And the best part?

We’ve only completed three tutoring sessions.

Then, on that SAME day, another parent came in bragging on her 4th grader.

He now has an A in math AND had just made an A on his latest math quiz — something his family wasn’t accustomed to seeing either. 🄹

Two students.
Two different grade levels.
Two VERY proud parents. 🧔

And yes, I’m excited about the grades.

But I’m even more excited about what happens when a child who has struggled with math starts collecting evidence that says:

ā€œWait…maybe I CAN do this.ā€

That’s how we begin changing more than grades.

We start changing confidence.

Every student and situation is different, and three tutoring sessions certainly aren’t a guarantee of straight A’s. But the right support can make a difference.

We work to figure out what students are missing, strengthen those skills, connect them to what they’re learning NOW, and give them opportunities to experience success.

Parents, if this school year is already showing you that your child needs additional math support, you don’t have to wait until they’re failing to get help.

This is one of the biggest things I wish more parents understood.

A student can be sitting in Algebra today while still carrying gaps from fractions, integers, equations, number sense, or other skills they were supposed to master years ago.

So we can explain today’s lesson over and over again…but if the prerequisite skill underneath it is missing, they’re still going to struggle.

That’s why effective math support isn’t just ā€œlet’s finish your homework.ā€

It’s figuring out where the breakdown actually happened and building from there.

And sometimes, once we find it, things can start changing pretty quickly. 🧔

Your child isn’t necessarily bad at math. There may simply be something they were never given the opportunity to fully learn.

I’m going to start breaking down some of the elementary and middle school math methods your children are bringing home so you can understand what they’re doing, WHY they’re doing it, and how it connects to the math we learned.

First up: Standard Algorithm vs. Partial Products.

Here’s the big takeaway:

šŸ‘‰šŸ¾ And there’s a reason they’re learning it.

Partial products helps students see the place value and mathematical thinking happening underneath the more efficient standard algorithm.

Once you understand the connection, some of this ā€œnew mathā€ starts making a LOT more sense. šŸ˜‚

I received this message from a teacher I recently supported as she prepared for her teacher certification audit.

She passed. šŸ™ŒšŸ¾

As part of her preparation, I had the opportunity to review and provide feedback on lessons in Statistics, Calculus, and Trigonometry— helping her think through the mathematics, strengthen her instruction, and prepare to demonstrate her content knowledge successfully.

And while I’m always excited when one of our K–12 students improves a grade, masters a skill, or starts believing in themselves again, The Math Success Coach has always been about something bigger:

Math should never be the reason someone misses an opportunity.

Not a child.

Not a college student.

Not an adult learner.

Not an educator working toward certification.

One thing I also want families to understand when choosing math support is that expertise matters.
