Yesterday, SOPH students, faculty, and staff traveled to the Mississippi Delta for an immersive learning experience exploring the factors that shape health in communities.

The group visited Plan A Health in Louise, the Mound Bayou Museum, the Delta Health Center Museum, and enjoyed lunch at Madea's Parris Place before concluding the day at the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in Indianola.

Throughout the trip, participants explored how history, access to healthcare, economic opportunity, community leadership, and culture influence health outcomes. From the story of the nation's first community health center in Mound Bayou to practical solutions that meet a community's health needs – for free – at Plan A Health, the Delta offered powerful lessons in resilience, innovation, and health equity.

Population health is about more than healthcare – it's about understanding the places where people live, work, learn, and thrive.

We’re proud to see Dr. Josie Bidwell, professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine, featured by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine as part of Project Remission.

In the interview, Dr. Bidwell discusses how lifestyle medicine is being delivered in Mississippi through flexible, community-centered approaches — including telehealth, interprofessional collaboration and innovative strategies to improve access to care in rural communities.

Her work reflects the heart of population health: meeting people where they are, addressing barriers to care and building healthier communities across Mississippi.

Congratulations, Dr. Bidwell!
