This past Thursday, Sept 17th, Cascades celebrated Constitution Day!!📜

Constitution Day is observed on September 17 to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution by delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787.

HISTORY

1911 in Iowa: Schools in Iowa held the earliest recorded observance of Constitution Day.

1917 Campaign: The Sons of the American Revolution launched a nationwide push for the holiday, aided by prominent figures like Calvin Coolidge.

1940 "I Am an American Day": Congress and President Franklin D. Roosevelt established a day in May to celebrate citizenship and patriotism.Evolution to Modern Law

1952 Relocation: President Harry Truman signed a law moving the citizenship observance to September 17 and renaming it Citizenship Day.

1956 Constitution Week: Congress asked the President to proclaim September 17–23 as Constitution Week.

1997–2004 Campaign: Activist Louise Leigh founded Constitution Day, Inc., leading Senator Robert Byrd to sponsor an amendment in 2004.

2004 Official Designation: President George W. Bush signed legislation officially naming September 17 as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.

*The law requires all educational institutions receiving federal funding to hold educational programs about the U.S. Constitution each year.

How Did Hispanic Heritage Month Begin?

What we now know as Hispanic Heritage Month actually started much smaller.In 1968, the United States first recognized Hispanic Heritage Week as a way to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic Americans.

Then, in 1988, the observance was expanded from one week to a full month, creating the celebration we recognize today from September 15 through October 15.

That growth reflects just how many stories, traditions, achievements, and communities there are to recognize.

✨ History gives us the chance to understand where a celebration began — and why it continues to matter today.

Fall Youth Sports at the Jackson YMCA

The Jackson YMCA is offering Fall 2026 youth sports programs for children ages 3–13. Programs include basketball, soccer, and Aikido.

Fall Session 1: September 12–October 17

Basketball, ages 3–6
Outdoor Soccer, ages 3–6
Aikido, ages 6–13

Fall Session 2: October 24–November 28

Indoor Soccer, ages 3–6
Basketball, ages 3–6
Aikido, ages 6–13

Programs are designed to help children build skills, confidence, teamwork, and enjoyment of the game.
