Procedures Week is consistently described by our Family Nurse Practitioner students as their favorite week of the entire program!
Our FNP students gather on campus each summer for an immersive, hands-on learning experience designed to strengthen clinical confidence and procedural competence.
Students complete two on-campus, week-long intensives throughout our 16-month program, with the remainder of their education delivered through online coursework and clinical experiences.
Working closely with faculty, students rotate through simulation labs, the cadaver lab, and one of only five plastination labs in the country, along with interactive face-to-face training sessions focused on essential skills they will use in practice as family nurse practitioners
It’s an amazing week of applying knowledge, refining technique, and preparing for real-world patient care.
We are now accepting applications for Fall 2027🎉

Today, we grieve the tragic loss of our dear friend, colleague, alumnus, and member of the Union Nurse Anesthesia family, Robert “Bob” Silvia.
Bob was part of the very first cohort of Union University’s nurse anesthesia program, beginning in 2006 and graduating in 2008. He loved this program deeply and remained a dedicated alumnus throughout his career. He was proud of this profession and deeply committed to seeing it continue to grow, advance, and thrive for those who would come after him.
To know Bob was to remember him. He had a presence about him that was unforgettable—kind, confident, genuine, and steady. If you met Bob even once, you remembered his name. You remembered his laugh, his stories, and the way he made people feel. He was the kind of person you wanted beside you in difficult moments in the operating room. Knowledgeable, calm, and dependable, Bob was someone people trusted completely, especially in an emergency.
But above all else, Bob was a family man. He was a devoted husband, proud father, and loving grandfather. His family was his greatest joy, and everything he did reflected the deep love he had for them.
Bob had a kind and giving heart. He advocated fiercely for what was right and fought hard for patients, colleague, and this profession. He was a lifelong learner in every sense of the word—never stagnant, never satisfied with “good enough.” He understood that to care well for patients, to provide for his family, and to advance this profession, he had to continue learning. He loved to teach others, generously sharing his knowledge and experience with students, colleagues, and friends.
He spent his entire career at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, where he became known and loved by so many. In the final seven years of his practice, Bob found a special passion in obstetric anesthesia, caring for mothers full time. He loved his patients, and they loved him right back.
And in true Bob fashion, his final moments reflected the generosity that defined his life. As an organ donor, Bob continued giving even after his passing—offering life and hope to others.
We are heartbroken. We are grieving not only an alumnus, but a true friend. Yet we are incredibly grateful for the privilege of having known him, worked alongside him, learned from him, and laughed with him.
Bob’s legacy will live on—in the lives he saved, the students and colleagues he shaped, the profession he championed, and the countless people who are better because they knew him.
We will be forever changed because of him.
He will be deeply missed, dearly loved, and never forgotten.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we recognize the importance of breaking stigma, increasing access to care, and preparing the next generation of mental health providers.
In our PMHNP program, students gain hands-on experience through simulation exercises, collaborative learning, and real-world psychiatric training designed to build confidence and clinical excellence.
From therapeutic communication to complex patient scenarios, our students are learning how to provide compassionate, evidence-based mental health care that truly changes lives.
We are proud to educate future Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners who are passionate about advocacy, healing, and serving their communities.

We were honored to welcome John Shields from the Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute to Union University today!
Our senior nurse anesthesia students had the opportunity for hands-on learning with Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) using Heartworks simulation technology. The session provided valuable experience in cardiac imaging, anatomy recognition, and clinical application in anesthesia practice.
Thank you, Dr. Shields, for investing in the next generation of CRNAs and sharing your expertise with our students!

As our Family Nurse Practitioner students come to campus to kick off Procedures Week, Dr. Tony Wamble shared a powerful devotional reminding us that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” and that God’s fingerprints are woven all throughout creation.
Using the example of laminin — the cross-shaped protein that holds the cells in our bodies together — Dr. Wamble encouraged students to look closely at the intricacy of God’s design and remember the One who ultimately holds it all together.
At Union, we believe understanding the foundation of creation helps us better understand anatomy, pathophysiology, and ultimately how to care for patients with greater wisdom, compassion, and purpose.
Our Christ-centered approach to nursing education challenges students to see patients as more than diagnoses — but as individuals intentionally created and deeply valued.❤️
If you’re looking for a deeper way to understand and care for your future patients, we invite you to apply to one of Union’s nurse practitioner programs and experience the difference for yourself!
