Ten Things Never, Ever To Say About Yourself 11/30/2017

The reason you don’t want to say these things is that they’re empty, redundant, cliche or otherwise questionable. Invariably (indeed, it‘s accurate to say always), when I’m called upon to enhance a client’s existing resume, I end up correcting one or more of these ten things...

Ten Things Never, Ever To Say About Yourself We have been taught to brag about ourselves in our professional branding, but that's terrible advice. The more illustrious a person is, the less likely they are to praise themselves. When someone is truly a guru, other people say "That person is a guru!" but the guru doesn't say it about thems

Times New Roman Is Bad for Your Career To some, using the seemingly innocuous font on a resume is akin to wearing sweatpants to an interview.

Applying to College Shouldn't Require Answering Life's Great Questions 11/27/2017

I will happily assist with the preparation of your child’s college application essay, within strict parameters of course.

While I can proofread, tweak, massage and otherwise subtly ensure that it’s written well, in the students voice, I will not - under any circumstances - write the thing for him, as several handful of parents have assumed I’d do...

Ten Job Search Moves That Make You Look Unprofessional Many recruiters and hiring managers have been in your situation! Convicted and Unemployed 11/15/2017

From a marketing/promotional standpoint, this is a counterintuitive post, I guess. But I put it up here as a part of my introduction to you all.

For three years a while back, I worked with newly released felons. Among my responsibilities was helping them get legitimate work; resume preparation for this population frequently required some narrative agility, as a fair percentage had either never worked at a "real" job or possessed mind-numbingly monotonous histories. One such existing resume that I was proud of livening up listed six separate employers, each with the same one bullet-pointed job description: "I cut heads off fish..."

Convicted and Unemployed States like Illinois bar ex-cons from entering dozens of professions, from architect to slaughtered livestock buyer.

Is the Cover Letter Dead? 11/12/2017

Good information here. The cover letter's role in the traditional job search has always been misunderstood. No employer ever has or ever will read a cover letter first, despite the fact that it technically introduces the resume. They'll back track and read it IF they're interested in or intrigued by the resume.
The two takeaways here, in my mind, are:
1.) Yes, they're more obsolete than they used to be, but still have one at the ready.
2.) Be careful what you do on Facebook, Twitter, et al...

Why let someone else do it?

Have you ever noticed that the best-selling autobiographies - the life stories that people are interested in reading - are nearly always "told to" someone? While these people have compelling insights and experiences, they trust the fine tuning of their personal histories to an individual who writes for a living. A professional. An author. A ghostwriter. Someone who can clearly convey the essence, who can make it fascinating instead of merely "readable."

Since your resume is as close as you may come to genuine autobiography, it is in your best interest to let us work with you...
