Is music theory math?
Music theory was once classified as a form of mathematics due to its foundational reliance on numerical relationships, ratios, and structured patterns, which were seen as essential to understanding harmony, rhythm, and form. This classification dates back to ancient Greece, where philosophers like Pythagoras and Aristotle regarded music as a scientific and mathematical discipline. Pythagoras discovered that musical intervals could be expressed as simple numerical ratios between the lengths of vibrating strings, establishing a direct link between mathematics and musical harmony.
His work laid the groundwork for the idea that music was governed by mathematical principles, a concept that persisted through the centuries.

This mathematical view of music was further institutionalized in the medieval period through the liberal arts curriculum, particularly the Quadrivium—a set of four subjects including arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music—taught as part of higher education.
The Quadrivium, derived from Plato’s Republic, positioned music as a mathematical art, not merely a performative one, emphasizing its study through numerical relationships and proportions.
Roman philosopher Boethius played a key role in transmitting and systematizing this Greek tradition in Western Europe, writing extensively on music theory from a mathematical perspective and influencing academic thought for centuries.

The classification of music as a branch of mathematics persisted until relatively recent times, as evidenced by the inclusion of music in the same category as arithmetic and geometry in educational frameworks. Even in the 18th century, composers like Rameau built harmonic theories on the mathematical basis of overtones and partial tones, reinforcing the idea that music was a structured, quantifiable system.
Thus, music theory was classified as a form of mathematics not only because of its use of ratios and patterns but also because of its role in the broader philosophical and educational framework that equated mathematical order with cosmic and aesthetic harmony.
There is a link between engineering and pianist as well. Over 26 years I have produced around 12 engineers. Still digging and studying why, and how the connection occurs.
