⚠️ PARENTS: PLEASE KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR “COB” / SYNTHETIC CANNABINOIDS ⚠️
Parents, guardians and young people should be aware of a dangerous substance being referred to on the street as “Cob.” The term is being used for certain v**e products containing synthetic cannabinoids laboratory made chemicals intended to produce effects similar to THC.
These substances may also be associated with names such as K2, Spice, synthetic ma*****na, or synthetic cannabinoids. They can be placed in v**e liquids and electronic ci******es, making them especially concerning because a device may look like an ordinary v**e. The DEA warns that synthetic cannabinoids can be unpredictable and may cause effects considerably more severe than ma*****na. (DEA)
🚨 WHAT PARENTS SHOULD WATCH FOR
Possible warning signs after use can include:
• Sudden confusion, disorientation, or unusual behavior
• Extreme anxiety, panic, paranoia, or agitation
• Hallucinations or appearing disconnected from reality
• Unexplained aggression or drastic mood changes
• Trembling or shaking
• Nausea or vomiting
• Rapid heartbeat or increased blood pressure
• Extreme drowsiness, loss of consciousness, or difficulty responding
• Seizures or convulsions
Parents should also pay attention to unfamiliar disposable v**es, v**e liquids or small bottles, particularly products with unusual names, colorful packaging, or products your child cannot clearly explain.
⚠️ THIS IS NOT “JUST MARIJUANA.”
Synthetic cannabinoids can have very different and much more unpredictable effects than natural cannabis. DEA reports have linked them to seizures, psychotic episodes, stroke, coma, acute kidney injury, heart attack, organ failure, and death. (DEA)
Mississippi has experienced firsthand how dangerous these drugs can be. During a 2015 outbreak involving synthetic cannabinoids, 721 cases and 11 deaths were reported statewide during approximately a one-month period. (CDC Stacks)
Parents, talk to your children. Do not assume that because something comes in a v**e or colorful commercial looking bottle that it is safe. The chemicals contained in illicit synthetic cannabinoid products can vary from one product or potentially one batch to another, making the effects extremely difficult to predict. (DEA)
If someone becomes unconscious, has a seizure, experiences severe agitation or hallucinations, has difficulty breathing, or suffers another serious reaction after using a suspected substance, call 911 immediately.
Parents, please educate yourselves, check what your children are carrying and using, and have these conversations now.
