More than five decades after his death, the family of William H. Copeland discovered another remarkable chapter in the life of a man whose legacy is deeply connected to Mississippi Valley State University.

Copeland, a trailblazing Montford Point Marine, will be posthumously honored with the Congressional Gold Medal. But his story of service did not end with the Marine Corps.

Hand-selected by MVSU founding President J.H. White to serve as food services director, Copeland spent more than 17 years serving Valley and its students. His son, Dr. Vincent H. Copeland, still hears stories from former students about how his father made sure they had a meal — even when they could not afford one.

His legacy of courage, education, family and service** now lives on through generations of the Copeland family.

Mississippi Valley State University is proud to present the 12th Annual B.B. King Day at MVSU Symposium on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 9 a.m.

This year’s theme, “Blues, Its Present and Future – The Advancement of AI Technology and the Preservation of a Blues Culture,” brings together tradition and innovation as we explore how emerging technology can help preserve and advance one of the Mississippi Delta’s greatest cultural treasures.
