Stories about how language, culture, and education abroad made a difference in the lives of some of our Arts & Sciences graduates!

While studying Linguistics at Cornell, Zelazzie learned methods of documenting and teaching endangered languages, and found a deeper understanding of global Indigenous language policies. Zelazzie's senior thesis for the Humanities Scholars Program, focusing on early language grammars written by Jesuit priests and their impact on Indigenous communities in the Sonoran desert, led to a broader understanding of personal family history.

By pursuing a Spanish major at Cornell, Hannah deepened her connection to her Mexican-American heritage and gained the confidence to embrace a language that once felt out of reach. Through intensive writing courses, graduate-level seminars and studies in Mexican history and politics, she strengthened both her bilingual and biliterate skills, ultimately leaving Cornell fluent and able to connect with her family on a deeper level.

When the world felt divided, Arina, the LRC's conversation hour facilitator, created a space for connection. Through Russian conversation hours, Arina turned language into a bridge: building community, encouraging open dialogue, and fostering a sense of belonging during a deeply difficult moment. What began as an empty room became a welcoming space centered on culture, conversation, and shared humanity.

Today we celebrate World Kiswahili Language Day! ๐ŸŒ

Spoken by millions across Africa and increasingly around the world, Kiswahili serves as a bridge across cultures and communities. In 2021, UNESCO proclaimed July 7 as World Kiswahili Language Day, recognizing the language's contributions to peace, unity, sustainable development, and cultural diversity. Kiswahili was later adopted as the seventh official language of UNESCO's General Conference.
