The NYSLTAP - Cornell Local Roads Program provides training, technical assistance, and information to municipal officials and employees responsible for the maintenance, construction, and management of local highways and bridges in New York State. It is one of 51 Centers established under the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) of the Federal Highway Administration.

An old golf cart wheel, some repurposed materials, and a good idea. That’s what earned the Town of Riverhead Highway Department national recognition! 🏆

At today’s FHWA Innovation Exchange, Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski shared the story behind his department’s Snow Fence Pole Remover, winner of the 2026 Build a Better Mousetrap Pioneer Award.

Riverhead puts up 10 to 20 miles of snow fence each year. That’s a lot of poles to pull when winter is over.

Mike’s invention uses leverage to lift the poles out of the ground, then rolls right along to the next one. Built entirely from repurposed materials, including an old golf cart wheel and box tubing, it makes the job quicker and easier on the crew. The reported cost? $0.

We’re proud to see New York ingenuity getting national attention. Congratulations to Mike and the Riverhead crew!

On September 24, the Illinois Department of Transportation is hosting Data Collection Part 1, a virtual ADA Coordinators Group meeting focused on collecting and documenting pedestrian facility data in the public right-of-way.

The session will cover practical methods for measuring and documenting:

• Curb ramps and blended transitions
• Detectable warnings and crosswalks
• Pedestrian pushbuttons
• Sidewalks
• Obstacles and hazards

It’s designed for ADA coordinators, but field staff, GIS staff, supervisors, consultants, and others involved in collecting or managing this data are encouraged to attend too.

Location: Online via Webex

Hosted by IDOT and HDR Engineering. Even though the program is based in Illinois, the data collection topics may be useful for local highway and public works professionals here in New York as well.

We’re so proud to see a New York local highway department recognized on the national stage!

Join the Federal Highway Administration on September 17 at 2 p.m. ET for an Innovation Exchange webinar highlighting the 2026 Build a Better Mousetrap award winners, including the Town of Riverhead Highway Department.

Riverhead received the Pioneer Award for its Snow Fence Pole Remover, an innovative tool built entirely from repurposed materials. The design helps reduce physical strain on workers, improves safety and productivity, and was created at virtually no cost.

The webinar will also feature award-winning innovations from Claremont Department of Public Works in New Hampshire and Johnson County, Iowa.
