Through their senior lab class in materials science and engineering, Nick and Alexis completed an internship with Quantera Analytical, an alumni-owned startup rethinking how tiny traces of chemicals can be detected in complex materials. For instance, helping plant breeders detect melatonin levels in cherries – amounts as small as a few parts per billion – which helps protect from fruit decay. 🍒

The massive steel tubes at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Kennedy Space Center towered into the sky, but 7-year-old Priya Abiram had no idea what they were.
“They’re rockets,” she remembered her dad telling her. “They’re the hardest things that humans have ever built, and it is even harder to fly them.”
Fifteen years after that vacation in Florida where she started dreaming of space, Abiram ’25 is graduating with her M.Eng in aerospace engineering and heading for a career in the space industry, advancing the understanding of how human bodies work in space and how to build systems to keep them alive.

Sometimes you have to build a bridge to find out what it will take to break it!
Teams of students in our Timber Engineering class (CEE5710) were tasked with designing and building 16-foot bridges, primarily out of two-by-fours, and then putting them to the test.
First members of our Civil and Environmental Engineering community tested out the bridges, judging them on safety and aesthetics, then students watched as 6,000 pounds were loaded onto to the bridges to test how much weight they could withstand before failing. Students made predictions about where their bridge would fail, and examined their broken bridges to learn more how and why these breaks happened.

Over hill and dale, Cornell Engineering students’ Internet of Things projects are benefiting communities across the Finger Lakes.
Central to the course, and to the broader goal of training engaged engineers, is learning how to navigate challenges, balance stakeholder needs, and build products that serve their purpose well, said Max Zhang, the Irving Porter Church Professor of Engineering in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in Duffield Engineering.
“A lot of real-world constraints and considerations are really hard to teach in the classroom,” said Zhang, who also serves as provost’s fellow for public engagement. “Bridging differences, cultural humility – those are important traits we want our students to have.”
