Cornell Tech has appointed two longtime faculty leaders to new academic leadership roles, naming Mert Sabuncu as Associate Dean for Research and Huseyin Topaloglu as Associate Dean for Education.

The newly created positions will help advance Cornell Tech's strategic priorities in research, academic innovation, industry engagement, and student success as the campus continues to expand its impact.

Artist-researcher sends climate science from lab to low-Earth orbit | Cornell Chronicle 07/31/2026

When a satellite orbiting 220 miles above Earth recorded a three-minute video about carbon dioxide this spring, it also captured the culmination of a Cornell University collaboration spanning art, engineering and climate science.

The project began in a chemical engineering laboratory and evolved through one student’s effort to transform research exploring new ways to recycle carbon dioxide, a major driver of climate change, into an artwork designed to orbit the planet it seeks to help protect.

Claire Choi ’28, an artist and undergraduate researcher in Tobias Hanrath's Energy Lab, created “CO2,” a video concept selected for the Xu Bing Space Art Residency Program.

The artwork draws directly on research underway in the Hanrath lab, which explores new approaches to electrochemical carbon dioxide conversion. Rather than treating carbon dioxide solely as a waste product, the lab explores how it can become a resource, transforming CO2 into useful fuels and materials through electrolysis.

“Reinventing what something is, is also what art does,” Choi said. “This project didn’t feel like translating two separate disciplines. It felt like making the same move in two places.”

As psychedelic drugs gain more support from the medical community as a potential treatment for severe depression – and with the U.S. government relaxing its regulatory constraints – there remains a vast gap in understanding how the drugs work on the brain. Alex Kwan, Ph.D. ’09, professor of biomedical engineering in the Cornell Duffield College of Engineering, is at the center of a multidisciplinary investigation that is exploring the basic neurobiology and mechanics behind psychedelic compounds such as psilocybin.
