OU's Heshe & Harriet Seif Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus is a joint program with Hillel that helps Orthodox students navigate the college environment

While Ithaca, NY may be cold, the Orthodox community at Cornell is nothing but warm as students live and learn with OU-JLIC couple Rabbi Daniel and Sarah Kasdan at one of the country's premier universities.

Our hearts are heavy with Israel, over the losses experienced today and the uncertainty that lies ahead. Unfortunately, this is not the first time as a community that we face the challenge of marking a holiday amid tragedy and the tense unknown, while our brothers and sisters are sitting in bomb shelters.

The Purim holdiay begins with with the Fast of Esther, a fast commemorating collective struggle and a shared burden. Our tradition teaches us that the transition to joy does not erase pain. Sadness and joy are bound together as complex companions, and celebration in times like these doesnโ€™t attempt to avoid the reality we face - it demands that we hold on to both grief and hope at once.

At the end of the Fast of Esther, before our transition into the celebrations of the day, let us come together as a community and share in song and prayer for the safety of our people and the American and Israeli service members and peaceful days to come.
