Sometimes, we need a bigger container to keep growing, and sometimes we need pruning.
This is my container garden. Less than 6 hours of sunlight per day works well for greens such as lettuce, baby chards, collard greens, short-day flowers, and herbs. The season here in Ithaca is short, and the plants do well in their containers until it is time to rest for the Fall/Winter. No need to pot them up into a bigger container.
Sometimes that is how I feel. Although the world pressure is to have a bigger container, more time in a day, more space, more this, more that, sometimes to grow well means not changing the pot to a bigger pot, but pruning. To develop better, not necessarily bigger.
The container restrains the plant growth while still being sufficient for the plant cycle and its purpose. If given more, more will need.
How to know when it is enough?

JUST THE RIGHT LOAD
Teachable moments with children. Children teaching adults.
As we paused our walk back home to observe a tiny ant carrying a multiple-times larger bee, my youngest one, now 4 years old, was amazed.
I asked her: "How do you think she* does it?".
She said: "The ant is strong!".
Me: How strong do you think she is?.
Her: "Very strong!".
Me: "Could she carry you around?".
Her: "Not THAT strong, mom!".
Me: "How do you know that?".
Her: "I don't know, but she can't carry me!"
Some things we know, even when we don't understand yet. We know that for bigger things, we need collaboration, and we need others to be able to carry a collective load. It is okay not to know how to do it, and we learn together.
*in the Portuguese language, formiga has the female article associated to it.
Are you ready to share the load?

Trillium - for most of the year, they remain dormant underground. However, they emerge and bloom, staying on the ground for just a few weeks, depending on the weather. They are part of ecosystems and have contributed to the cycle of life.
How do you feel knowing that you are part of something much bigger than you could ever see or imagine?

Yay! The first Collard Greens (thinning process) are ready for harvest! The girls sowed the seeds in pots around Mid-March, and we ensured they received sunlight and kept the soil moist. Yes, we, the entire family, made an effort to care. Gratefully, they survived the frost. This week, we harvested.
And the First Harvest is the best!
As you can see from the picture, it is just a little, but how precious. My spouse made a Brazilian-style collard green by frying it with garlic, and we shared it! Five meals. I was savoring the handful of collard green in a prayerful appreciation to life, food, shelter, and the presence of love and beloved ones.
For what are you most grateful today?

(...) I will call it the "paperweight closer look". By taking a closer look at what matters. By paying attention to acts of kindness and generosity. By being present in the moment. By serving others. The big things or the small things. What do I see inside the paperweight? HOPE.
And you? What needs reframing in your life?

Many times in life, we taste the bitterness of loss, frustration, and sadness. Although less frequently, we seek to acknowledge and appreciate those moments as transformational and as opportunities for learning and growth.

"Friendship" was the first word that came to my daughter's mind when she saw this photo.

To whom would you offer your friendship?
With whom would you choose to grow together?

ONE DESTINATION, MANY PATHS
Sometimes we get stuck on our path, and it gets worse when you know that there is no way back. (...)
Whether we are eliminating options or exploring alternate ways of moving forward, we tend to feel unstuck when we move, taking one step at a time.

Sometimes, the world wants us to believe that we should only engage when we feel happy or intentional. Is that really so? I challenge that all the time. (...) Your mindset and attitude in that particular situation and afterward will have a significant impact on the consequences and on how you remember it. Willingness has everything to do with it.
