Today, the Ithaca College community gathered to mourn the loss of Michael Lewis, assistant professor of photography in the Roy H. Park School of Communications, who passed away on September 19.

At Ithaca College, Michael’s greatest impact is seen in the students he taught.

He challenged students to find their own visual voices, pushed them to see differently, and shared the hard-earned knowledge of a working photographer with generosity and candor.

We are grateful for the creativity, mentorship, and humanity Michael brought to South Hill. His motto, “still making pictures,” will live on through the many students and colleagues whose lives he touched.

The 1991 Ithaca College football team is headed into the Athletic Hall of Fame during Homecoming Weekend, honoring the team behind one of the most memorable seasons in Bomber history.

But for the players and coaches, the legacy goes beyond the championship. It’s about the camaraderie, resilience, and culture that brought the team together.

What connects a student's showstopping Commencement Eve solo with ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, The Price Is Right, and music classrooms across the country?

More than a century of Ithaca College bands.

Photos are:

Patrick Conway opened his Military Band School in Ithaca in 1922. His goal went beyond teaching students to play: He wanted them to become conductors, composers, teachers, and leaders.

Beginning in the early 1930s, Walter Beeler helped turn the Ithaca College Concert Band into a nationally recognized program and prepared generations of musicians to carry that reputation forward.

Arnald Gabriel ’50, HDRMU ’89, carried his IC education to one of the country’s most prominent musical posts as conductor and commander of the United States Air Force Band.

Jim Hynes ’78 first picked up a trumpet at age 17. He went on to perform on Broadway, tour with Paul Simon, and play music heard by millions on The Price Is Right and Sunday Night Football.

More than a century after the story began, Ithaca College musicians are still taking the stage, entering classrooms, and helping the next generation find its sound.
