Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® would like to celebrate our Sister Maria Taylor, as she made history at Super Bowl LX!

On February 8, 2026, she became the FIRST Black woman to host a Super Bowl pregame show and the first Black woman to present the Vince Lombardi Trophy, a powerful moment of excellence on one of the world’s biggest stages.

Maria anchored NBC’s five-hour pregame coverage with poise and presence, then took the field to present the championship trophy to the Seattle Seahawks, continuing a legacy of women making history in sports media.

As we recognize Black History Month, we honor Sister Maria’s continued impact and trailblazing career, from the Super Bowl stage to Milan for NBC’s 2026 Winter Olympics coverage, and into her next chapter leading NBA and WNBA coverage with NBC Sports.

Sister Maria was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,® Eta Xi Chapter, at the University of Georgia, in Fall 2007.🩷💚

Educator, administrator, and one of the original founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Lucy Diggs Slowe was born July 4, 1885 in Berryville, Virginia, but raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Howard University in 1908 and was class valedictorian. While at Howard, she co-founded the sorority January 15, 1908. She helped draft the sorority’s constitution and served as the first president. After graduation, Stowe returned to Baltimore to teach high school English. She also attended Columbia University where she earned her Master of Arts degree in 1915.
In 1917, Slowe won the national title at the first tournament of the American Tennis Association. She was the first Black woman to win a major sports title. Slowe returned to Washington, D.C. in 1919 to establish the first junior high school in D.C. and served as principal until 1922. That year, she was appointed the first dean of women at Howard, a position she held until her death. Slowe also founded the NationalAssociationofCollegeWomen, and served as the first president for several years. She also led for several years the Association of Advisors to Women in Colored Schools.
Lucy Diggs Slowe died on October 21, 1937. Lucy Diggs Slowe Hall at Howard opened in 1943 and Lucy Diggs Slowe Elementary School in D.C. is named in her honor. Slowe was posthumously inducted into the Maryland Women’s Hall of Fame in 2011. Her biography, “Faithful to the Task at Hand: The Life of Lucy Diggs Slowe,” was published in 2012. Transcending her era's limits, Lucy Slowe was a woman of many "firsts". We continue to honor this pioneers great story.
