"This can only lead to more rights for women." grumbled a third.
-You Forgot Your Skirt Amelia Bloomer!
Book by Shana Corey
We spent our circle time today talking about female "change makers" and reflecting on why someone would make the above statement as if it's a bad thing (the fancy gentlemen are SHOCKED at the sight of women wearing pants). Last month we celebrated black change makers who made the world a better place for everyone despite the fact that the norm for much of history has been for white people to hold the power and make decisions for everyone. This month we are building on how those concepts of injustice, inequality and power imbalance have affected women throughout history. We talked about how the patriarchy can be harmful for everyone, not just women and girls, and how we all are change makers when we stand up and speak out when something doesn't feel fair.
There is a lot to unpack here, but young children are ready to discuss big topics. Children naturally have a strong sense of justice so broadening their perspective to be aware of systemic inequality and how it persists by becoming normalized, helps them to spot and speak out against injustice wherever it is found.

Preschoolers are ready to notice and talk about what makes us the same and what makes us different. As parents and teachers, it is important to engage in these conversations with our children instead of sweeping them under the rug. This joyful book about our beautiful skin is a favorite at OTM.

"Raise kids of color to feel proud of their culture and their right to self-advocate.
Raise white kids to recognize their duty to stand up against injustice.
But first, youโve gotta acknowledge that racial differences โ even though they are an imaginary, human-imagined construct, exist as a real thing in our society, with real-life impact on real-life people"

Good stuff here. How to nurture independence while honoring and respecting children's play is our constant goal and question.
It is always so interesting to read about the history of American parenting. It seems like when we're on to a good idea we tend to take it to the extreme and ruin it a bit.
Parents Are Expected to Play With Their Kids All the Time, and Itโs Exhausting. Is There a Better Way?
Being your childโs dedicated playmate may not be as necessary as many seem to think.
