The Southeast Asia Program (SEAP) was founded in 1950 to promote the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge about countries, cultures and languages of the region. Its twenty core and eight emeritus faculty members have collective knowledge of Southeast Asia, which amounts to one of the world’s greatest concentrations of expertise on this region. Six language lecturers teach 4 levels of study in Burmese, Indonesian, Khmer, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese. Department of Education continuously recognized SEAP as a Title VI National Resource Center. As an NRC for more than six decades, we train experts on the region; meet strategic national needs in government, business, science, and professional fields; and provide K-16 educational outreach. As of August 15, 2025, fourth-year allocated Title VI funding has not been received. Echols Collection on Southeast Asia, the George McT. Kahin Center for Advanced Research on Southeast Asia, and SEAP Publications. The first is the largest collection on the region (over 500,000 monographs in 162 indigenous languages). The Kahin Center is an academic home to SEAP graduate students, visiting fellows and scholars, faculty members and SEAP's Publication and Outreach offices. SEAP publishes Southeast Asian monographs and language textbooks, including the only journal exclusively on Indonesia. It also makes downloads of its Cornell Modern Indonesia Project (CMIP) and SEAP Data papers accessible gratis.

SEA-ing Indonesia

Against the backdrop of post-independence nation-building, especially during the New Order regime, Indonesia has consistently assimilated the ocean to a land-based perspective, and one moreover that focuses—under the rubric of ‘landscape ’—on its more solid, extractive, and materially driven formations. But this was not always the case. What happens if we regard the land from the point of view of the sea?

Nyegara-Gunung is a divine “marriage” of two powerful natural elements, inextricably tied to one another. Whatever occurs on the summit of a mountain, for example, has a direct effect on the sea and vice versa. It is through the liminal interaction of these primordial forces and elements that the universe and all life within it are created.

We'd like to highlight another great book from the SEAP Publications catalogue!

In Indigenous Dialectics, Timo Duile explores the history of indigeneity as a political force in Indonesia, considering how it came into existence in relation to the state and political economy. Duile sheds light on indigeneity in the national context and analyzes how it developed dialectically from late colonialism to the post-reformasi era in its relation to the state.

Indigenous Dialectics focuses on the process of recognition of Indigenous communities in South Sulawesi, especially in the Duri highlands. The Duri ethnic group lives in the regency of Enrekang, one of the first regencies in Indonesia to adopt a local regulation (peraturan daerah) on the recognition of Indigenous communities. Through ethnographic analysis, Duile demonstrates that indigeneity as an ideology comes into existence through its negation and sublation of and by the state. Ultimately, it is suggested that indigeneity as an identity and concept is both an expression and critique of political, historical, and economic circumstances.
