Call for Papers! The 29th SEAP Graduate Student Conference: Breakdown and Reconfiguration

The 29th SEAP Graduate Student Conference will be held on October 22-23, 2026 at Cornell University’s Kahin Center for Advanced Research on Southeast Asia in Ithaca, New York, and on Zoom.

We welcome abstract submissions by July 15, 2026 of original work related to Southeast Asia by current graduate students, with preference to those who have already completed fieldwork and qualifying exams. Students who will have defended a dissertation by August 2026 are not eligible. Limited funding is available to support travel to Ithaca.

Congratulations to Evelyn Fettes, recipient of the 2026 Lisa Sansoucy Language Scholar Award!

The 2026 Lisa Sansoucy Language Scholar Award has been awarded to Evelyn Elmer Fettes, a Ph.D. candidate in linguistics. Evelyn completed advanced studies of Indonesian through the Shared Course Initiative (SCI) and is currently conducting field research in Indonesia for her dissertation on syntactic microvariation in nominal phrases of Western Malayo-Polynesian languages.

Her Indonesian professor and nominator, Jolanda Pandin, noted that Evelyn stands out as a lifelong language learner with a strong commitment to giving back to language-learning communities. After completing Cayuga Language and Culture I and II courses at Cornell, Evelyn served as a teaching assistant for the introductory level and facilitated Cayuga and Indonesian Conversation Hours at the LRC.

The "Cohesion under Crisis" research team (Professors Cesi Cruz, Allen Hicken, Anil Menon, Tom Pepinsky, and Dan Slater), under the auspices of a Minerva grant on that theme, is offering five fellowships of $18,000 each for current graduate students or recent graduates seeking to undertake fieldwork in one of the following Southeast Asian countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam!

Congratulations to SEAP alumna Caroline Sy Hau, named the 2026 Fukuoka Prize Academic Prize Laureate!

A scholar of Southeast Asian studies, literary critic, and writer, Hau is recognized for her incisive, humanistic work across regional studies, literary scholarship, and fiction. The Fukuoka Prize honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to preserving, creating, and sharing the diverse cultures of Asia.

The American Institute for Indonesian Studies (AIFIS) and Michigan State University (MSU) Asian Studies Center will convene the 6th annual AIFIS-MSU Conference on Indonesian Studies from May 26-30, 2026.

Presented in a bilingual and virtual format, the conference is designed to bring together scholars working across geographic and disciplinary frameworks to explore the evolving field of area studies research in Indonesia.

CFP: Religion and Populism in Asia: Institutional Contexts and Political Consequences

This workshop seeks to bring together scholars examining the institutional, ideological, and social mechanisms through which religion and populism interact across Asian contexts. We welcome both theoretical contributions and empirical case studies that advance comparative understanding of this phenomenon.
