The Roy H. Park School of Communications mourns the sudden loss of Assistant Professor Michael Lewis. We celebrate his life by remembering a talented and accomplished photographer who mentored and inspired many students to challenge themselves to become passionate about photography, light, and art. Michael will be deeply missed but his legacy will live on through the many students and colleagues who had the privilege of working with him. Michael's photography portfolio can be viewed at www.michaellewisphotography.com.

The Photography Faculty have beautifully created cards for students, faculty, and staff to share kind thoughts and memories of Professor Michael Lewis. They will give the cards to his family so they know how much he was admired and appreciated. Cards can be found outside the Park Photo Gallery.

Additionally, a gathering will be held on Thursday, September 24 at 3:30pm in Muller Chapel to remember Michael and honor his impact on our campus. There will be time for those who wish to share.

SCREENING & TALKBACK with Award-Winning Alumni Documentarians

We are thrilled to welcome Maya Cueva ’15 and Leah Galant ’15 back to Park for classroom talks and a public screening and talkback on September 16.

Maya and Leah co-directed On the Divide (2021), an award-winning documentary that follows three Latinx residents of McAllen, Texas, whose lives intersect at the last abortion clinic on the U.S.-Mexico border. On the Divide premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and aired on PBS, reaching more than one million viewers.

Maya Cueva ’15 is an award-winning director and producer whose work spans documentary film, radio, and audio. A Netflix Nonfiction Fellow and DOC NYC 40 Under 40 honoree, her work has appeared in The New Yorker, NPR, The Atlantic, and National Geographic. She is currently directing a documentary about her grandfather, Dr. Quentin Young, a physician and healthcare advocate whose work drew FBI scrutiny during the civil rights era.

Leah Galant ’15 is a New York-based documentary director whose work explores unexpected stories that challenge perceptions. Her short film Death Metal Grandma, about a Holocaust survivor turned death metal singer, premiered at SXSW and became a New York Times Op-Doc. Leah was named to DOC NYC’s 40 Under 40 in 2022 and is a member-owner of Meerkat Media.

Professor Chrissy Guest recently attended the UFVA Conference in Minneapolis and was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award! This nomination honors film educators who showcase innovation in the field and have a commitment to equity. She thanks students and faculty alike for nominating her for this award. Congratulations again Professor Guest!🥳

Exciting news! The Hollywood Reporter named Ithaca College one of the top 25 film schools in the country, ranking IC at No. 17.

At the Roy H. Park School of Communications, students gain hands-on experience in film, documentary studies, journalism, and beyond—using industry-standard equipment, including new ARRI cameras, and graduating ready to tell compelling stories that reach audiences around the world.

Jack DeNick '27, Nicholas Polisi '26, Cameron Strong '26, all Television and Digital Media Production students, attended the largest broadcast convention in the industry in Los Vegas, NV thanks to the Park School's Special Opportunities for Students funding (SOS).⁠

During the conference, they connected with numerous alumni and industry professional networks through scheduled catch-ups and casual networking. The team engaged with key vendors, including Sony, Vizrt, AEQ, and Zero Density, alongside the Park School's Chrissy Guest, Nigel Martin, and Christin deBrigard. ⁠

They also met with representatives of products currently utilized in the Park, discussing future feature enhancements and exploring optimized workflows to improve existing setups. Nick also collected his Broadcasting Education Association award for the 2025 ICTV Holiday Special.⁠

A highlight of the trip was an exclusive, private tour of the Sphere, arranged through an alumni connection, and a viewing of The Wizard of Oz the following day. ⁠

The Golden Doorknob Awards will be returning during the 2026-27 academic year as an annual competition thanks to a generous contribution by Dan Heffner '78, Executive Producer of the SAW franchise.

The Golden Doorknob competition was started in 1969 by Ithaca College professor emeritus of cinema and photography Gustav "Skip" Landen. All film students had the same assignment: make a very short film that presents the most imaginative way to kill someone with a doorknob.

Now it is YOUR TURN to make a Golden Doorknob film to enter into contest for the opportunity to win cash prizes and a golden doorknob trophy. Submissions are judged by a panel of professionals.

The competition theme has been expanded so that the “death by doorknob” concept may go beyond physical death–it may be the end of a relationship, an emotion, an institution, or a time in history–anything that can come to an end.

Submissions are due on Monday, March 29, 2027 5pm EDT (stay tuned for details and entry form this fall!)

The screening, red carpet, and awards event will be on Friday, April 16, 2027
