Humanities Scholars ➡️ Humanities Advocates

Earlier this month a group of four Humanities Scholars Program students, along with two graduate students sponsored by the Society for the Humanities - Cornell University, travelled to Washington D.C. to participate in the National Humanities Alliance Annual Meeting and Advocacy day.

The opportunity allowed students to engage on the future of the Humanities with academics from across the U.S., and brought them into the offices of representatives from New York and their home states to advocate on behalf of funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities, and speak to the importance of continued support for the humanities in education.

Humanities Scholars Program Director Verity Platt, professor of classics and history of art, announces new book, "Epistemic Impressions: Making and Mediating Classical Art and Text."

Released in February 2026 as a part of Oxford University Press' "Classics in Theory" series, the book "explores how Greek authors ... formulated relationships between texts and objects. Drawing on theories of media and moving beyond the concepts of description (ekphrasis) and imitation (mimesis), which have dominated so much scholarship on the text-image relationship in antiquity, it focuses on the language of the impression (typos) ..." (https://classics.cornell.edu/verity-platt)

Professor Platt sat down with Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences to speak about the book and its significance. Read "Making an impression: A new approach to classical concepts of the image" here: https://as.cornell.edu/news/making-impression-new-approach-classical-concepts-image

Don't miss this incredible opportunity to engage with contemporary artist Harmonia Rosales! Growing up visiting the Art Institute of Chicago, Rosales was captivated by Renaissance painting — but years later, her daughter's simple observation that "they don't look like me" exposed the exclusion at the heart of that tradition. Rosales' paintings reimagine Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces with Black protagonists and West African spirituality.

When: Monday, October 20, 2025 @ 5:15pm
Where: Milstein Auditorium, Milstein Hall
Organized by Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences Humanities Scholars Program - Cornell University and Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning Department of Art, cosponsored by the Department of History of Art and Visual Studies
