Snowy Creek Christian Academy

Snowy Creek Christian Academy A Classical Education/Charlotte Mason approach umbrella school. Using hands-on learning. Home instruction or small classes available. Reasonably priced.

One to one student/teacher ratio. Subject tutoring also available. Snowy Creek Christian Academy is unique among umbrella schools.

• Our educational philosophy is founded on the principles of Charlotte Mason, a British educator of the early 1900’s. We use a unique, hands-on, classical approach, striving for mastery of both the given subjects and the interest of the student. Thus, our school days

do not follow the typical public schools. We believe children have a hunger to know about the world around them, and when that passion is ignited will create a life-long love of learning.

• We only accept a small number of enrollees each semester—no more than 15 students per semester. This allows us to focus more attention on the students and families that are a part of SCCA.

• We offer two forms of enrollment for students of SCCA. Our OutBound Learning Students are taught by the parent or tutor at your home with curriculum provided by SCCA. There are three different packages available in this learning tier to accommodate your needs. Please see our Products page for information on these packages. Our InBound Learning Students are taught at our location, three days a week with curriculum provided by SCCA. Our school day starts at 9:30 am and ends at 3 pm, with a forty minute lunch break. Homework assignments are given out to be completed by the student before the beginning of the next school week. Please see our Products page for details on tuition, fees, and payment schedules.

• Our semester runs for 15 weeks and meets a minimum of three times a week. The 2017-18 school year dates are August 21-December 7, and January 8-May 11. Holidays include: Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, and President's Day. Please consult your calendar for the dates these holidays occur during this school year.

• We do, from time to time, take field trips to various places around the DFW Metroplex and surrounding counties. If a parent is not planning to accompany the student on the field trip, a medical release/directive form must be signed for each trip. If the trip requires an entrance fee and/or lunch fee, you will be informed in advance. All field trips are optional.

• We do not use the same curriculum for every student. While some subjects can be taught in a group setting, each student and family that applies take an evaluation test to discover how the student learns, the academic subjects that are important to the parents, and any gaps in academic performance to date. The answers to these questions assist us in creating a custom curriculum that fits the needs of the student with the goals of the parents kept firmly in mind. As a result of our customizing, success in the student’s learning process is much more assured.

• While we do offer flexible scheduling for all our students, we have found that the best learning hours are at the start of the day. Therefore, we begin our school day in the morning. In order to ensure that your student is progressing, all Outbound Learning students must meet with an advisor at least twice a month. These meetings are scheduled at a time when the parent/tutor can be present as well. If your student is enrolled as an Inbound Learning student (three face to face days, along with homework assignments to be finished at home), it is important that your student arrives on time, and be ready for their day of learning!

• Ongoing academic counseling and support is a part of our program. We set phone times that your advisor, as we call our teachers, is available for you. Your advisor will assist you in evaluating the day to day, week to week, and month to month progress of your student. If an adjustment needs to be made in your curriculum, even mid-semester, these counseling/support sessions help. Academic success is much more assured with the hands-on approach.

• Placement testing in the five core subjects (Math, English, Social Studies, Science, and Spelling) are available. If your student has learning gaps, these test will reveal that, and the curriculum can be designed to fill in those gaps.

• In addition to the five Core Subjects, we also offer custom curriculum in Literature, Creative Writing, Bible, Art, Latin, Geography, and Cursive Writing.

• College-bound students can have their curriculum designed to prepare them for the rigors of College studies.

• We offer on-going Record Keeping and Transcript Preparation. Our Outbound Learning student packages allow for you to decide if you want to keep these records, or if you would like us to. For all Inbound Learning students, records are kept daily and weekly. Progress Reports (like a report card) are mailed to each parent monthly.

• SCCA will assist parents in navigating your state’s requirements for homeschooling. Becoming a member of the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) is a requirement for all families enrolled in our Academy.

The Power of Literature! A short but fascinating read to help remind us all of the importance of cultivating the art of reading in our children!!

I'm always a bit saddened when a parent raises an objection to fictional literature. Usually the objections take the form of three main concerns. Let's look at each of those concerns and review how good literature can actually be very beneficial.

Another great article from Sonya Shafer. With so many students watching the eclipse yesterday, the question has to be asked....how large is our classroom?

True education is recognizing connections everywhere you turn, and that can only be done when you have a personal relation with a wide variety of subjects.

What are the "3 R's of Charlotte Mason Approach to Education"? Read this short article for the answers.

We came up with 3 Gs that seem to neatly summarize a Charlotte Mason education: good habits, great books, and guided discovery. Those three phrases capture a handy snapshot of what a CM parent should be giving her students.
