FYI- Building community. Let’s build this nest TOGETHER.

Today I had one of those experiences that reminded me what that actually means.

Many of you know I was the PTSA President at Issaquah Middle School for 3+ years. Today, I was asked if I could come back and help with Business Days.

My last child is now a sophomore. I haven’t had a kid at IMS for over a year. Technically, it isn’t “my school” anymore.

But of course I said yes.

I brought my son and a few of his friends along to help. The boys had a great time, earned some community service hours, saw some old teachers and staff, and jumped right back into a place that was once such a huge part of their lives.

And THIS is what community means to me.

Community isn’t just showing up while your own child is in the building. It isn’t a transaction that ends when your kid moves on to high school.

It’s relationships. It’s history. It’s belonging. It’s looking around and saying, I can still help here.

For more than 5 years years, IMS trusted me with its families, its students, its staff, and its community. Today, more than a year after my last kid walked out those doors as a student, they still knew they could call me.

And I still knew I would show up.

And here’s the thing: you don’t have to be a PTSA president to build community.

Volunteer for two hours. Bring your teenager with you. Coach a team. Help at a school event. Drop off food. Join the PTSA. Check on a neighbor. Support the local food bank. Show up when someone asks for an extra set of hands.

And maybe most importantly, keep showing up even when there’s nothing in it for you.

We talk a lot about wanting stronger schools and stronger communities. This is how we get them.

Not through some giant program or initiative.

People.

People knowing one another. People taking care of places that once took care of them. People teaching their kids that being part of a community means contributing to it.

You don’t have to change the whole world.

Just look around your little corner of it and ask, “Where can I help?”

Then show up. ❤️

I’ve been waiting to share anything out of respect for the McGowan family’s privacy. Many of our students and families are saddened to hear of this news. Now that the information is public and a go fund me https://gofund.me/1d68c78a2 has been shared, we want to share it with our community as well.

If you are able, please support the McGowan family. Principal McGowan and his family have given so much to this community, and they deserve our support, compassion, and respect right now.

I also want to address something because several people have reached out to me since yesterday after finding links online claiming to be obituaries for PCMS Principal Jeff McGowan.

Those are fake.

Frankly, I find it disgusting that sites like this exist and prey on families and communities during incredibly painful situations.

Please do not share them, click on them, or treat them as confirmation of anything.

As always, particularly when something involves one of our local families: if the information is not coming directly from the family or from a reputable LOCAL source, please disregard it.

Let’s give the McGowan family the privacy, grace, and support they deserve. 💔😢
