Ever notice how many sharks are dark on top and light underneath? That pattern is called countershading, and it’s one of the ocean’s best camouflage tricks. 🦈
From above, a shark’s darker back blends into the deep, shadowy water below. From below, its lighter belly matches the bright, sunlit surface. The result: it becomes much harder to spot from either direction—whether you’re predator or prey. 😎😎
Sharks aren’t the only ones using this strategy. Sea turtles, whales, many seabirds, and even some caterpillars all use countershading to stay hidden in plain sight. Different environments, same evolutionary solution.
Next time you’re in or on the water, look closely—you might be surrounded by animals using this simple but powerful illusion.
