•STUDENT HIGHLIGHT•
Eddie has been training for nearly 6 years. Between 20 years in the New Jersey Army National Guard, serving as a Sheriff’s Officer, and being a SWAT operator, he’s built a career around service, discipline, and protecting others.
We spoke with Eddie about his journey and these are some of his thoughts:
When asked why he trains, his answer has evolved over the years.
“At first it was to learn how to defend myself without striking, now it’s a tool I use for mental health.”
“Jiu-Jitsu is a gateway to physical, emotional and mental health. The mats tell you about yourself.”
His career was one of the reasons he started training in the first place.
“If I can control you without striking you, it’s a win for everyone.”
That mindset has given him confidence both on and off the job.
“I’m more confident in my abilities to defend myself and anyone around me.”
Physically, the transformation has been just as meaningful.
“I was focused on strength training and not so much on cardio. Now my body feels balanced with strength, size and stamina.”
One of his proudest moments came when years of hard work were recognized.
“When Jav promoted me from a 2 stripe white belt to a blue belt. I felt seen by my coach and by my peers.”
His favorite attacks? “Any type of arm bar,” although he admits that “the crucifix” is his favorite position because of the many attacks available from there. And when it comes to Gi or No-Gi?
“Gi all day!”
What keeps him showing up?
“I think about my peers. It may not be a good day for me, but it can be a great day for them and I want to contribute to that.”
Looking back, the advice he’d give himself is simple:
“Patience. You’re going to get tapped. You’re going to have a stretch where you think you’re not improving. It’s ok. It’s part of the journey.”
And for anyone thinking about starting?
“Stay calm. There’s always going to be someone better than you.”
That’s what it’s all about. 💪
