The Backcountry Trail Patrol Association Patrol was formed by three Anoka County Park Rangers in 1995, and the first Backcountry patrollers were trained as US Forest Service Volunteer Backcountry Rangers (now called "Aides") in 1999.

A family vacation to Yellowstone National Park was interrupted when their little girl went into cardiac arrest.
