This month in the Athenaeum After-School Program, our theme was “Behind the Scenes.” We focused on roles in our communities and how they serve us all. Topics included first responders, park rangers, librarians, custodians, community organizers, historical associations, and more. Our academy lives and communities could not function without the people who fulfill these and many other important roles, so we wanted to pause and take time to learn about them and show our appreciation.

All in for the Gym

Located in the strategic center of Dallas/Fort Worth, the Irving campus of Great Hearts is the first school of Great Hearts Academies in North Texas. Great Hearts Irving (GHI) is positioned to become a hub from which to launch an educational revolution in the city of Irving, North Texas and beyond. In doing so, GHI seeks to radically transform the trajectory of the lives of thousands of young men and women for generations to come.

Since its beginning in 2015/2016, GHI has seen remarkable growth attracting students largely from Irving but also from dozens of communities across Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW). With 766 students (K-7) its first year, GHI now serves approximately 900 students (K-10). With a current wait list of more than 1,600 students, GHI seeks to address the demand by expanding its footprint and mission impact in the community.

Currently in a leased facility located at 3350 Story Rd W, Great Hearts Irving is expanding to a new, permanent location.

GHI is in the quiet stage of a capital campaign to raise the funds to build Phase One of a K-12 campus master plan. Phase One includes:

Land (app. 11 acres), landscaping, parking lot, driveway

Construction of the 40,000 square foot Upper School for grades 7 – 12, to include multi-purpose room with storm shelter and necessary furnishings

Construction of the 15,000 square foot gymnasium to include catering kitchen, weight room, locker rooms. The gym will be equipped to also serve as the cafeteria and performing arts space. This building will be constructed when $2,000,000 million in pledges have been received and $1 million of those pledges are realized.

GHI closed on the land purchase in July 2018, and the school community celebrated the groundbreaking with a ceremonial turning of the soil in September 2018. Faculty and staff are excited to welcome Upper School students for the 2019/2020 school year.

The tagline All in for the Gym has been created to highlight the active and pressing need to raise funds so we can begin construction on the gym.

Phase Two of the construction project will happen a few years down the road, to be completed by the time our long-term lease in the existing facility has ended. This phase will see the building of the Lower School for grades 6 – 12. With the success of this capital campaign, we will not need to have another capital campaign to complete Phase Two.

Now is the time for those closest to the school and those passionate about school choice and teaching students to think critically to invest in its future. In the spirit of a Great Hearts education, this challenge is a call to thoughtful and generous action. In supporting this project, an investor is not merely helping build buildings. Beyond bricks and mortar, investors ensure a permanent K-12 campus home where students can receive a life changing tuition-free education for years to come.
