Last weekend, a German tradition made its return to the University of Dallas Irving campus!

Students donned their lederhosen, tested their skills in a German spelling bee, and shared in fellowship in celebration of Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest is a festival that first began in 1810 and is centrally hosted in Munich annually. The tradition spread globally and is now a favorite celebration of UD students.

These festivities have been held on the UD campus for several years as a reminder of UD's connection with Western Europe. Not only do we partake in their educational tradition, but we share in their celebrations as well!

Math teacher. Software engineer. Photographer. Jewelry maker.

Norma Fries, BA ’76, a mathematics major at UD, has built a life across remarkably different fields, but to her, those chapters are not as disconnected as they might first appear.

After graduating from UD, Norma began her career teaching mathematics. She often told her students that the reason she could still solve questions decades after first learning the material was simple: she had truly understood it, rather than merely memorized it.

That depth of understanding stayed with her as she moved from teaching into technology, eventually spending 29 years in information technology at IBM. Today, she is applying both her technical and creative skills in another chapter of life through photography and jewelry making.

She also an advanced collector of ancient coins who shares her knowledge as a lecturer.

Norma’s path is a reminder that a UD liberal education does not prepare us for only one job or one season of life. It forms habits of mind that allow us to understand deeply, adapt confidently, and continue pursuing new possibilities.

First-generation UD sophomore student Julian Herrera returned to Europe this September to continue his summer research at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France.

Working alongside researchers there, Julian is contributing to cryotrapping research involving xenon isotopes, an opportunity that places him at the intersection of advanced experimental physics and international scientific collaboration.

For Julian, the journey is especially meaningful. His grandparents never had the opportunity to attend high school. Now, through the mentorship of Dr. Jacob Moldenhauer and the strength of UD’s Physics program, he is conducting research abroad, climbing French mountains and finding his place in the world of particle physics.

His story is a striking example of how far curiosity, mentorship, and a UD education can take a student.

We encourage you to check out this extensive collection of works by UD faculty, whether you use their scholarship as a springboard for further study or as a new topic to explore for your own enjoyment.

For a university with UD’s focused liberal arts mission, the range of faculty scholarship represented here is especially impressive.

University of Dallas students are gaining hands-on experience with technology not commonly available at peer institutions.

With a new DNA sequencer in the Department of Biology, students are moving beyond the classroom to prepare samples, perform genomic sequencing, and analyze complex data sets while developing skills in biotechnology, computational biology, and bio-data science.

“Having access to this instrument has allowed me to apply concepts learned in the classroom to real-world research and build experience with technologies that will benefit my future career in healthcare and dentistry,” one student researcher shared.

Faculty-led training is also preparing students to take on greater leadership in the sequencing workflow, from sample preparation and quality control to data analysis.

The sequencer, along with a forthcoming high-performance computing system that will further expand UD’s research capabilities, is made possible through generous funding from the Longwell Family Foundation.

We are grateful for this investment in our students, faculty, and the future of scientific research at UD.

What is a classical education really for?

In a recent essay for National Review, University of Dallas President Jonathan J. Sanford argues that reading the great books is only the beginning. A true classical education should teach students how to wrestle with competing ideas, pursue truth, and grow in wisdom.

The University of Dallas Drama Department invites audiences to enjoy two comedies this fall, a classic satire and a playful murder mystery. Both productions are now well underway in rehearsals and preparation.
The season opens with the main stage production of Nikolai Gogol’s The Government Inspector (Oct. 28–Nov. 7), directed by Professor Stefan Novinski. A case of mistaken identity sends a small Russian town into chaos in this witty satire of greed and corruption.

The season concludes with Tom Stoppard’s The Real Inspector Hound (Dec. 3–5), a Senior Studio production directed by drama and classics major Penelope Pulsone. This comedic murder mystery blurs the lines between theater and reality.

Both productions will take place on the Temp Stage in the Drama Building. Tickets go on sale Oct. 19 for The Government Inspector and Nov. 30 for The Real Inspector Hound.

Happy Feast of St. Francis of Assisi!

St. Francis (d. 1226) was an Italian friar and mystic. He was the founder of the Franciscan Order, a mendicant religious order centered around charity and discipleship. Every semester, the students in UD's Rome program visit Assisi, where St. Francis spent the majority of his life.

St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us!
