One of our favorite traditions at Class 101 is creating a unique theme every year to celebrate our seniors before application season kicks into high gear. It's a week filled with fun, memories, and a reminder that this exciting journey is just beginning.

🚨 The Common App is officially OPEN! 🎉

If you're a rising senior or parent, take a deep breath.

Every August 1, thousands of families rush to complete the entire application on day one. The result? Slow servers, website glitches, stressed students, and essays written under unnecessary pressure.

Here's the good news: Most Early Action and Early Decision deadlines aren't until November 1 through November 15. You have time.

Here's what I recommend today:

✅ Create your Common App account.
✅ Complete the easy sections like your Profile and Family information.
✅ Explore the application and get familiar with it.

Then... step away.

Your college essay deserves your best thinking, not a rushed late night because everyone else is trying to submit on the same day. The essay is one of the few places where admissions officers get to know the person behind the transcript.

🎓 The Common App opens in just 4 days!

If you have a rising senior, this is the perfect time to make sure a few key pieces are in place before the application officially opens.

This week, we're helping families focus on three things:

✅ Finalizing a balanced college list based on academic fit, affordability, campus culture, and career goals.

✅ Requesting transcripts and letters of recommendation before counselors and teachers become overwhelmed once school starts.

✅ Starting the personal essay. The Common App prompts haven't changed, so students can begin brainstorming and drafting now instead of waiting until August 1.

The truth is, a successful application season isn't built in one weekend. It's built through thoughtful preparation, one step at a time.

Take a moment to ask your student:

📌 Is your college list finalized?
📌 Have you requested your letters of recommendation?
📌 Have you started your Common App essay?

The students who earn the most scholarship money aren't always the students with the highest GPA. They're the ones who apply consistently.

Here are 3 scholarship opportunities to check out this week:

🏆 $1,500 Award
✅ Open to U.S. residents ages 14 and older.

"I'll worry about college when my child becomes a senior."

Unfortunately, by senior year, many important opportunities have already passed.

Here's what students should be doing before senior year:

📚 9th Grade: Build strong study habits, explore interests, and get involved in activities.

🏆 10th Grade: Take on leadership roles, continue building your résumé, and begin researching scholarships.

📝 11th Grade: Visit colleges, prepare for the SAT or ACT, finalize your college list, and start your college essays.

🎓 12th Grade: Submit applications early, complete the FAFSA, apply for scholarships, and compare financial aid offers.

College admissions isn't about doing one big thing during senior year. It's about making smart decisions over several years that create more opportunities.
